perineal massage

edited August 2011 in Third Trimester
So I have read all the benefits of massaging down there, but following my first attempt this morning I'm feeling a little demotivated. Firstly I couldn't reach down there properly an secondly when I did manage to insert two thumbs and stretch as advised (sorry tmi) I couldn't help but believe I was doing it wrong despite experiencing "the burn". Have any of you ladies had difficulties with this or have any useful tips? I'm terrified of tearing during the birth so am doing all I can to avoid!! Any advise appreciated!

  • I learned that if you have a birthing birth,to put a warm rag on it,sir down(bare) and rock on it
  • It sounds like you were doing it right, also massage olive oil there as well (not inside you) it will help moisturize the skin.
And as @valentinasmommy said, using a warm rag when you're in labor down there will help too a lot of nurses are very willing to do it. It also helps when it comes time for pushing.
  • Thanks ladies! Will def try the warm rag. It's just frustrating when they make it sound so easy. Maybe I just have short arms.... !
  • If you can't do it, when you go to your dr appointments, you can ask your ob to do it and your ob and nurses can do it while you're in labor too. My midwife was doing it in between me pushing him out.
