  • @jona1... I didn't know that an abnormal pap meant hpv. I've had an abnormal pap before but was not diagnosed with hpv. They tested me again in a few months and it was normal. Was the hpv a separate diagnosis? I know for some women, an abnormal pap is normal. I'm no expert but I don't think that having hpv will prevent u from having a normal pregnancy. Good luck
  • I was the same way I found out I had hpv a couple of days ago n I'm still scared n I'm only 19.....

  • Don't be frightened it should notcause you strife throughout your pregnancy. HPV is totally common. over half of the sexually active community have it. Your baby should not be affected by it. Don't worry. Call your ob so they can tell you more about it.
  • @dawnwaarsbaby I believe what happens, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, is one the pap comes back abnormal the pathologist tests for hpv at that time. Hpv is what causes the abnormal cells on the cervix also the warts two.

@jona1 you should ask your doc what strains you have, do you have the strains that cause abnormal cells, or warts, or both. If it's the warts there's a possibility they my show up when preg but will go away. Also ask her what type of abnormal cells and what grade. I think they will just monitor it while you are preg and if needed, do something about it when you deliver.
  • I'm 20 I had an abnormal pap when I first found out I was pregnant it will not harm your baby and it may not harm you it depends on what stage itsat sometimes it goes away and if it goes anywhere sometimes it can be removed and treated I'm 25 weeks right now and they are goin to look at mine again at the end of my third trimester to see if its still there or what I was scared I had cancer I cried for days but I have faith that it will be ok good. Luck
  • Abnormal does not mean hpv they actually have to do a biopsy to confirm hpv I had a doc tell me hpv because of a abnormal result and the next doc told me flat out I did not have hpv and never did unless they did a biopsy and I know this is true because I am a ob gyn nurse in school to be a ob gyn doc
  • I had abnormal cells on cervix. They thought it was.hpv or cancer. Well its neither....
  • @mommyof3boys that's not what happened to me. I had a pap, was called back in to the dr, he said you have high grade dysplasia and you tested positive for various strains of hpv. At that point I arranged the biopsy , which lead to the leep, that was a good few years ago. Now a second dr told me they don't always test for hpv during pap because nowadays its a given that if it comes back low/grade whatever, it's automatically assumed you have it. Maybe each dr does it different so. Of course you can have an abnormal pap with inflammation, but that's a different thing.
  • Having an abnormal pap smear does not automatically mean that you have HPV. It can just be dysplasia and they will do a test of the tissue to determine further what it is. Don't worry too much until you can get more information. I had a LEEP done and every pap smear I've had has been normal since 10 years ago. More than half of sexually active people can carry different strains of it and as lot of times, it goes away within time.
  • @suziq... thanks for that info. That's one of the reasons I love this site. You can get really good info and comfort. Its good to feel like your not alone in your plight. @jona1... I hope all this good info and support helped u...
  • Its depending on wht type there r more than 100 types of hpv and 70%of men and women get it at least once in thier life and never see it again. I had hpv aswell I then got a byopsy to check for cervical cancer and came out fine then months later im free of hpv lol I of course have to get checked every 6 months to make sure its not back.. Hopefully tht puts you to ease. Im sure ull be fine :)
  • I had it they had me come in 6 month later of a recheck and it was all cleared up. I was just checked again and was all clear.
  • thank you soo much ladys for the support it means so much to have so much friends out there that i didnt even know,,,, I will have to call my doctor and ask her for more information about it, I was hoping to have a normal pregnancy with this one ,I had GBS with my daughter but was sad and stressful to even think you have a uranary infection and she was ok but was born with cross eyes but they have gotten so much better you dont even see she had it,but I am praying this baby will be a healthy one. but again thank you so mush ladys :X
  • I had a colposcopy and they found just one small abnormal spot on my cervix very worried! :( I don't want cancer.. I wanna live to see my baby's babies!
  • ^ haven't heard back since cells were sent off... they said minor hpv before colposcopy I guess ill know soon
  • @jona1 - hpv during pregnancy is not typically an issue. Rarely the baby can ingest the virus on its way through the birth canal. It is important to note that an abnormal pap does not immediately mean hpv, being gbs+ wouldn't have made your daughter cross eyed and hpv NEVER GOES AWAY. Being symptom free is not the same as being "cured" - and gardasil does NOTHING once you've contracted the virus. I hope all goes well for you and the other ladies here - we need to pay more attention to this issue.
  • Thank you hope you are right just worried about it.

  • Actually my mom is an ob/gyn and certain strains of hpv do clear up and gardasil also does protect against certain strains of course there are strains where gardasil is useless and are uncurable but not all
