expired carseats

So, today I called the hospital where I am delivering to make sure that my carseat was still ok to use, there is a 4 year gap between my son, and my new baby. They asked if the seat was expired, and come to find out it was, I was then informed that if the seat is expired the hospital won't let you take your baby home in it! So today, I had to go find a carseat that was inexpensive, what I wanted. Finally found one, beware expired carseats! If I hadn't called to find out if my seat was ok to use, I would have been in big trouble in a few days!

    My hospital will provide you with s graco carseat might not be the most fanciest one but its brand new and you don't need a base. You might ask them.

    @crazyhmommy there is either a expiration date on the bottom of the seat or its 5years from the manufactured date what is on there.

    Oooo I just learned somethig new thank you, I was gonna use a car seat that was given to us but its a few years old so ima have to look

    @crazyhmommy yes do look, I had no clue that they expired. I was in a bit of shock when they told me. But I am glad that I found out today, cuz I am going in to have her tomorrow, and then I would have been sol!

    I had an expired one for my daughter n my hospital didn't care just shows how safe they are lol.

    @mommyto1soontob2 where I deliver they even make you take a class before they let you go and make sure about your seat. They will even make sure that the carseat will be adjusted right. It's sad that they didn't care.

    Wow thanks for info. I wanted to use my daughters car seat but if urs is old after 5 yrs. Mines gotta be expired. Bout that over 10 yrs ago. Does it have a tag that says a date? Ima go look now.

    Yea the carseats usually have a year on them. They say the plastic gets brittle and can weaken and break if you get in a car accident. Most people don't realize it. I'm not sure when they started expiring.

    @one5one the date is usuially on the bottom of the seat printed into the plastic. It says do not use carseat after *month year* that is what mine says any way, it is a graco carseat. I was also told that if it is expired you can take it to your local fire department, and they will get it back to the manufacturer, so they can recycle it. :)

    Nervous try hating them. Being in labor for TWO weeks being sent home leaking water. Having SIX pockets of water thank god or me leaking coulda been bad. It finally breaks on the Damn nurses foot who kept sending me home and tellin me I was not leaking! Pushed for no lie 12 hours needed csection cause she was stuck like I predicted n facing up. We fall off bed while I was breast feeding passed out with nobody monitering me only three hours outta surgery. I was numb from waste down n had air things on legs only to wake up on floor with my baby screaming! I have to go to tht hospital cause my state insurance. So yeah im freakin out

    my friend spent $650 on a car seat then didn't overall it and.carried bub home all the wsy from hospital when I found uut I went nuts but really what can I dp its not my kid

    The hospital i am delivering at won't let you use a carseat that is over 4 years old and if its used you have to sign a paper saying you know the risks of using a used carseat. We are just buying a new one.

    The hospital I deliver at the l&d nurse comes out to make sure your carpet is installed right and checks to make sure baby is in it correctly

    @marierica thanks!!! I so greatly needed that laugh!!!! I've been laying in bed with painful contractions for a few hours now! The laugh didn't help my pain but was very much welcomed.

    Lol I haven't really been keeping track. I know they are just close enough to be annoying but not close enough to call the doctor. I think I needed to drink more water than I did today. I had to leave work early to come home and crawl into bed.
