Forgotten how to breastfeed!?!

edited February 2013 in Pregnant
The last time I breastfeed was 6 years ago with MJ.
Bugaboo is due in around 4 weeks and I'm finding myself stressing about how to do it, how long it will take for my milk to come in etc. I've asked my midwife for advice and all she said it's like riding a bike, you never forget. Is this true? I only breastfed MJ for 8 weeks due to post natal depression and being put on meds to help me.
I'm worried that it's been to long and I'm going to fail. I really want to succeed this time where I failed the last. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance x

  • Don't stress about it. You will be perfectly fine! I had a 4 yr gap between kids so i know how you feel. But the second time around it came so natural to me. Im sure it will be the same for you! :-)
  • Your milk normally comes in at around day 3.
Try to have skin to skin contact with bubs as soon as poss after you've given birth, quite often babies will latch on themselves.
Make sure you get your latch checked while still in the hospital.
Don't be afraid to ask for help.
See if there are any local support groups (am I right in thinking you're in the UK?) LLL, NCT, there also seem to be a lot of peer to peer groups run with health visitors.
    Good luck mama xx
  • I'm a ftm and have had great luck bf. I was worried like you were and at first I had trouble, but after the first few days and my milk came in, everything came natural to me. I agree with skin to skin. I feel like I didn't do that enough, but here I am at almost 15m and still bf and don't plan on stopping soon.
  • The milk comes in on day 3 for most. But they don't need much at first just little bit but feed them closer together. you will do great just think of it this way I only have one soo far and no one showed me and I didn't take any classes before I had my daughter and it all worked out great. Especially since you have any questions there's always someone at the hospital that will be very helpful and babies are amazing they may know exactly what to do! It is like writing a bike just kids happens :).
