Weight gain 35 weeks pregnant

edited July 2013 in Pregnant
Hello all,

I haven't posted on this forum in a long time. But I'm 35 weeks pregnant and I've only gained 6 lbs the whole pregnancy. I started off at 201 lbs when I first found out I was pregnant. A couple weeks ago I weighed 210 lbs but the very next week I lost 3 lbs and haven't been able to gain weight since then.

Today I went to the doc and weighed in at 207 lbs. my doc is a little upset I haven't gained weight in 3 weeks. He wants me to gain 3-4 lbs by the time I'm scheduled for delivery.

By the way I have a 20 month old that keeps me on my feet all day long.

Any suggestions??? TIA.

  • Well how tall are you? If your average girl hight and was 201 before getting pregnant there's no reason to gain weight in the first place. The main reason there is weigh gain is to make sure you're body can handle pregnancy and babies are small I don't think u should worry about it at all. I mean with my first I was 89 pounds when I got pregnant end up gaining 13 was all baby and water most doc would have wanted me to gain more since I was underweight but my daughter was nice and healthy average size baby girl. Then this time around I started off with 80 pounds so even smaller and not gaining much only 2 pounds so far and I'm 18 weeks tom. My daughter isn't worried at all its I'm underweight a little because I am short but since my fist was good size and so far this baby is pretty good size no reason to stress about your personal weight. As long as your eating healthy drinking plenty of water, and do at least little physical activity your doing great! Don't let the doc get to you :)
  • I'm 5ft 6in and was 190 before this pregnancy. I'm 17wks and have only gained 3lbs. Mostly I think because I have a 20mo that I have to chase around and take care of and also I was really sick in the beginning so I couldn't keep food down. I'm not worried and neither is my Dr. In fact she wants me to try and lose weight because I'm a little on the heavy side. As long as your baby is measuring fine it's probably a good thing you're not gaining weight.

If you were overweight to begin with then an "expected," and healthy weight gain range is generally 15-25 pounds. I quoted expected because this is a general guide for healthier outcomes, not something written in stone. I think the general concern with your physician is about inadequate nutrition, not your lack of weight gain. He is probably concerned that if you aren't eating sufficiently that baby will not gain desired weight during the last week's of the 3rd trimester, which MAY complicate things; however, that is not guaranteed and unknown, so don't put too much thought into this if you are eating and not skimming on food. What your physician fails to know for certain is that your baby is actually gaining sufficiently while you slowly drop weight, which is not unusual in women who are overweight. If your aim is on gaining weight, focus on healthier and more wholesome foods versus unhealthy takeout options. Incorporate calorie dense foods and add an extra half serving of protein to meals, which will help increase your daily caloric intake, which will also aid in a healthier and more nutritious weight gain strategy.

  • With my daughter I fell pregnant at 205, and was. 189 the day I had her. Tell that dr to shove his weight worries where the sun don't shine. ;)
