feeling miserable...

edited March 2011 in Health
I went to the Er last night with a fever of 102.5 and they said it was strep and gave me antibiotics & said they were safe for me & the baby. That was last night around 7 and I've been taking the medicine but my fever hasn't gone down much, I'm sore everywhere, so weak I can barely walk and to top it all off morning sickness started this morning. My boyfriend called the er back because my fever hadn't gone down and they said just wait it out. I feel bad because I kept him up all night constantly getting up and complaining. Any ideas of what would help?

  • Are you taking tylenol for the fever? You can take up to 8 extra strength tylenol a day. And popsicles may calm your throat down some and help break the fever. I hope you feel better soon

Ive been taking tylenol and ill get some popsicles
  • Drink lots of water and keep up with the tyleonl. If you have an ob, give him/her a call and let them know. A fever over 100 degrees in the first trimester they take very seriously and do as much as they can to bring it down :) hope you feel better soon!
  • Our hospital isn't very good, in my opinion and they didn't seem concerned at all. I'll call him soon! I just had chicken noodle, took some tylenol and I am drinking lots and lots of water. I feel a little better right now and my fever went down to 99.8, but this happened yesterday and then I felt horrible again after about an hour, I hope I stay feeling better
  • You need to see another doctor them a fever not controled well can be so bad for the baby! Dont be scary dear but i really think u need another doctor opinion and they need to hear the baby hearth for be sure is not affecting
  • I know, I am really worried about it too; im only 5 weeks and the er doctor just shrugged it off, not to mention was very rude. Ima call my OB if it doesn't go down soon
  • Just keep drinking water and take all the cold showers you can. The thing here is the tylenol is not helping much so maybe you need other medicine and just a doctor can tell u wath exactly u have. That sucks when the doctors treat u rude the should know that can be dangerous for them careers. Showers water and other doctor :X

My temp finally went down and is now at 97.3, I feel a lot better, though my throat is still Swollen
  • You can try sucking altoids or popsicles. They may help a little.
  • Glad to hear that :X
  • If you want a holistic approach (I always try to go natural first....) There is something that is safe during pregnancy....I have already taken it once, as has many of my friends when they were pregnant, and my taoist recommended it to me. Even my Yoga teacher uses it. It's called Umcka. I suggest getting the childrens version which is 99% alcohol free. It works great and is all natural. When I got sick with a cold when I was around 5 months prego my doc tried to tell me to take tylenol or robetussin. I refused. Then I started feeling so bad I was just about to give in. I got to the pharamcy just to see there were no tyelenol left on the shelf. Turns out they recalled all tylenol products! That was the second recall in a matter of a few months! I prefer not to take any synthetic drugs....mama earth put medicinal plants there for a reason! Use them. ;) Good luck. P.S. you could find Umcka in the health food store. Also, keep that body temp down...it isn't good for baby. Drink lots of cold water, wear light clothes (even though you probably feel cold), and rest up.
  • If this happens again and the ER doctor refers you back home, try to contact your OB/GYN doctor as soon as possible and get an appointment with him/her to get checked out.

In the meantime, as @keylanieq said, take lukewarm to cold showers to help bring down the temperature, keep as much liquid in you as possible (Pedialyte and Gatorade help replace the important electrolytes you will be lacking as you become dehydrated with a fever; water is good, but these are better), and take Tylenol as directed. Gurgle salt water to help with the swollen, sore throat.

Also, @mommy2be_1st, do not be afraid to speak up in the emergency room if you have any questions able the doctor's diagnosis or bedside manner. They are there to help the patients, and if you feel as though you cannot get the best service from that doctor, talk to your nurse and see if there is another doctor on call you can see. When it comes to you and your little one, you deserve the best care possible.
