Negative reaction to epidurals in past? What labor pain alternatives are you considering?

edited March 2011 in Giving birth
How many of you have had negative reactions to previous epidurals? How did you deal with the side effects, and did you have any long term effects from your epidural? If so, what alternative labor pain management options are you considering?

I was involved in a pretty bad wreck a few years ago, and I had a neck injury for which I was directed to get an epidural to relieve the pain. Considering the few weeks of chronic, unrelenting pain, I decided to go ahead with the procedure. As soon as the medicine hit me, I knew something was wrong. Unfortunately, I am a part of that small percentage that has a negative reaction to epidurals. Instead of relieving pain, I was in more pain afterward than I had been beforehand, and after the doctor removed the needle from my spine, I spent the next several minutes throwing up. Never once was I numb in the area, and I spent the next week with a mild fever, unable to move my back or neck, and highly nauseated. The doctor who did the shot did a follow up, and he told me that I would probably have the same "allergic type" reaction during labor if I chose to have an epidural, so I might want to consider other options for birthing pain management.

I have done much research, and I am leaning toward requesting nitrous oxide gas - hopefully it becomes available at my local hospital. (This option is starting to make a come back in America; the United Kingdom and Canada have the same thing under the name of Entonox.) Otherwise, I am considering an IV, although I really do not like the idea of how the medicine might affect the baby.

What are everyone else's experiences and opinions?

  • I had epidural with my first and after birth right up to my son being two I couldn't bend down as it give me a bad back and still 5 years in I have a numb patch at the bottom of my spine off needle , second birth I had di diamorphine and codiene great stuff and has and air at the very end so this time I will prob do the same if not then I will try use nothing depends how fast or slow labour goes x
  • I've not had a negative reaction to epidural but I'm worried I may! I'm going to try gas and air and a TENS machine then a water birth (fingers crossed!) Although my fiancee has been told if I need meds give me meds!
  • @cameronmum How did you like the air?

@pretty_princess_1 I had something similar to the TENS machine during physical therapy after my wreck, and it was a-maz-ing. It did so much more than the epidural I had!
  • I had nubane ... which made me start seeing thing and soonafter passed out and dont remember much until I started pushing even then I was out of it ... when I realised the nubane didnt work for pain they decided to give me epidural which worked great
  • I will have mine natural if god meant for us to not feel the pain he would have made it painless goin through that pain can make u appreciate ur baby even more and truthfully it ain that bad I have pushed out two 9 lb babys with no pain meds and my second labor was started by induction and it was great goin natural cause as soon as I am done delivering the placenta I can be up moving around and in bathroom cleaning myself up while they change my sheets on my bed I couldn't imagine bein stuck in the bed for hrs after just because I was drugged
  • @mommyof3boys Oh wow! I would like to think I can go completely natural because I have such a high pain tolerance, but I want to plan for the possibility of not being able to go fully natural. I do like the idea of being able to walk around after birth, hence why if it becomes available I would prefer nitrous oxide over most forms of pain management. It is a momentary pain relief and very temporary, and I would be able to get up after birth just as if I had given birth completely natural.
  • Gas and air was only goif while pushing as it makes u concentrate on it breathing and before I know it baby is born but I will have to wait to give birth again as I m/c on Tuesday x x
  • My first I had an etrathiqual which didn't work like they said. I didn't know about the other alternatives besides epidural.
  • @cameronmom I am sorry to hear about your m/c. I wish you the very best.

@Proudmomma That is my concern, since the epidural I had in the past definitely did anything but what they promised it would! Shutter. Thankfully, as a Nursing student, I have starting to become exposed to the many different types of pain management alternatives for labor, but I really want to hear other people's experiences of them, too, to best make my decision in the future.
  • Let me know what you find out cause I would like little pain as possible and I'm getting close to baby time
  • I don't think nitris is a good idea for me cause I don't want to risk hulicinations (however you spell it)

  • I have had 3 epidurals. All were great at taking away the pain. However w my 2nd i did get the dreaded "headache" that they warn u about. Well, this is NO typical headache. It was so bad i was throwing up from the pain. It lasted 3 days... it was a true nightmare... i had 3 blood patches done. The 3rd one finally worked after i forced mtself to drink like a gallon of water. It was not fun! I did get an epidural after than and it was fine. I think i will go natural this next time... but only because my last 2 births went SUPER fast.
