Too many ultrasounds?

edited March 2011 in September 2011
I have heard from a couple different sources that too many ultrasounds can be harmful to the baby. Even one source that said ultrasounds might be linked to autism?.?. I am 13 weeks and have had 3 so far. Does anyone think that is too many?

  • I think you are fine. I myself put full trust in my doctor, if you can't do that maybe that's a sign to move on to another doc.
  • No no I fully love my Dr I think that is why I am so conflicted. He wants to do them and I LOVE seeing my little one but then I hear these negative sides from others and it worries me. I now can't tell my dad I've gone to the Dr without a huge lecture about how I need to leave the baby alone and let him grow. I want to see how others feel.
  • I had one at 6wks,10, 12 and 20wks, then every two weeks from 24 weeks until I delivered my twins at 37wks. They're 21 months now and super-bright boys, no problems at all :-)
  • As of Thursday, I have had 11 ultrasounds and I'm only 30 weeks. I'm not too worried about it. If it were that big of an issue, I don't think my doc would risk it. I've never heard of that study, though. I'll have to Google it and see what I find. :)
  • I'm 12 weeks. And had 3 I think it's I Dont think the Dr be wrong with what they doing your fine
  • Thanks for the reassurance.
  • I've heard that too. I've had one at 6, 9, and 11 weeks. The last 2 were just because I was paranoid. My next is scheduled for 18 weeks but I hope my OB sends me for another before that. Towards the end I will be getting them more frequently so I really hope this isn't true.
  • High risk pregnancies need to see more and to be monitored. My friend had over 12 her whole pregnancy
  • Yeah I think I'm considered high risk this time around and that's why I'm gonna have so many. I'd rather risk too many ultrasounds and keep a close eye on things than have my baby die...again. :(
  • Does that mean I might be high risk? I'm 25 and this is my first baby. I've asked Dr if everything looks ok and he says yes but could he not be telling me something?
  • Was there any particular reason they've given you 3 so far Serenibaby? During my first pregnancy I only had one at 20 weeks and everyone seemed to think it was unusual that I didn't have more. I don't think your doctor would be keeping anything important from you.
  • I don't think so. I took a test Jan 12 and it was positive. It was a week before I missed my period so i thought with the holidays I must have missed one and not known so I told my Dr office that and they got me in right away. Counting now I have had 4 so far. One at 5 1/2 weeks one at 8 weeks two at 12 weeks. He says I'm fine and the baby has a strong heartbeat but I go back next week and I was just there last week. I am just thinking it is a little much if there isn't anything wrong with us...
  • Yeah that does seem a little odd. I would just ask him next week when you go. Ultrasounds typically aren't given that frequently for no reason.
  • In Germany I had one every month (for about 15 min each) till I was 7 months then every 2 weeks and my daughter is healthy.. My SSG (Boss) had one every 2 weeks since she was 5 weeks and her girls (twins) are healthy with no problems at all. I have a sonogram photo album of my daughter w/ about 25-30 pictures from 5 weeks pregnant and on...
  • I have a teacher who was a midwife and she gave me lectures that drs didn't really know the effects of having a bunch of u/s and that it was a way to make money.
  • I heard it was dangerous too but I have had 3 so far and one was with a different doctor then she moved so I had to pick the one who delivered my son but it was my doctor who told me that it was dangerous so you should avoid them if possible I mean if your scheduled for one its fine but don't go asking for them just Cuz your paranoid just relax and if you need reassurance ask to hear the heartbeat. ;)
  • My sister has to have an ultrasound every time she goes to the Dr...she had abdominal surgery when she was 14 and 3 c sections so her scar tissue is blocking the doppler from picking up the fetal heart rate...
  • Total crap I am 37 weeks and 6 days and I have had 11 ultrasounds

  • Ultrasound = sound waves they r not xray. In Singapore we get us every month & sone every 2 weeks during first tri, then every 3 then 2 then 1 week till due date in e 3rd tri. We r def getting more us here.
  • I've only had one and I'm 14 weeks. But honestly if they would have linked autism with u/s we wouldn't be getting them anymore. This is just how they linked phones with cancer. A doctor is going to know what's best for your baby.(: not some study. Especially since autism is something to due with genes and such.
  • my dr said it don't hurt bub but can reduce birth size ive had 5 at 30 weeks now

  • @HomeBirthAdvocate - I have had so many because I am high risk. I have 1-2 a week. I had 2 when pregnant with my son.

Just wanted to clear that up! :)

  • I am a nurse and I have heard nothing of the sort about ultrasounds being dangerous for baby. An ultrasound is just that, high frequency sound waves. I had 3 with my son. It does seem as though your doctor isn't telling you something though, because I don't think insurabce will cover more thatn necessary, and he hasn't said you are high risk.
  • Both my Dr.s say that they r not harmful and I have had 6 or 7 by 13 weeks but thats because I am high risk and I will have at least a dozen more before delivery. A "normal" pregnancy They usually only do 1 or 2 maybe 3 depending on dr for the entire pregnancy
