terbutaline shot at 37.6 weeks?

edited March 2011 in Third Trimester
I was having contractions 2-3 mins apart from 7:30 last night till about 5:00 this morning while in triage(L&D) and I dilated a cm while there but they weren't wanting to admit me so they gave me a terbutaline and morphine shot for pain. They did NOT tell me it would stop my contractions! I'm not Preterm so I don't understand why they would purposely stop labor. Frustrated but I get to see my ob tomorrow to raise hell. Anyone else experience same kind of thing?

  • My doc told me specifically she would not stop labor after 34 weeks. Thats crazy, I'd be pissed!
  • My ob told me on Wednesday that I was about 2-2 1/2 cms dilated and said if I go into triage this weekend with steady contractions 5 mins apart or less and if my cervix changes he will admit me. Well... the on call doc apparently didn't agree. I'm furious!
  • I'd be livid. My doctor said after 36 weeks if I'm in labor we'll deliever.
  • Too late now... they stopped my labor in its tracks and sent me home to suffer knowing I could have delivered my son today.
  • Is there anyway to get contractions going again like walking or anything?
  • Walking, sex out orgasm hahaha, if you have a breast pump you can try pumping each breast for a few min every ten min. Google nipple stimulation
  • sex or orgasm
  • Maybe if you can get them started again then they'll admit you.
  • I don't know but I'm gonna try. I'm so upset.
  • Thanks ladies. I'm gonna Trey what I can before my appt tomorrow.
  • they should not have stopped ur labor u r full term at 37 weeks raise some hell
  • @mommyof3boys I'm definitely going to raise hell tomorrow. Ill be 38 weeks tomorrow, I know he was ready to come.
  • I also will be 38 weeks tomorrow is ur due date march 28th also
  • :O

Ohhh I would be livid!! Sounds like the on call doc was being a lazy piece of you know what and didn't want to ruin his/her weekend plans... Outrageous!
  • @mommyof3boys yes,March 28th is the due date for my little guy.

@BkE913 I was thinking the same thing :(
  • We have the same due date and are both havin boys that's pretty cool
  • The FDA put out a warning against Terbutaline just recently. (http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm243539.htm)

What it says: "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public that injectable terbutaline should not be used in pregnant women for prevention or prolonged treatment (beyond 48-72 hours) of preterm labor in either the hospital or outpatient setting because of the potential for serious maternal heart problems and death. The agency is requiring the addition of a Boxed Warning and Contraindication to the terbutaline injection label to warn against this use. In addition, oral terbutaline should not be used for prevention or any treatment of preterm labor because it has not been shown to be effective and has similar safety concerns."

It goes on to say, "Although it may be clinically deemed appropriate based on the healthcare professional's judgment to administer terbutaline by injection in urgent and individual obstetrical situations in a hospital setting, the prolonged use of this drug to prevent recurrent preterm labor can result in maternal heart problems and death."

If they attempt to administer it again, I would definitely raise some questions!
  • @mommyof3boys that is exciting! You are the first I've talked with that had the same EDD. :)
@fingerscrossed thank you. Ill be looking into that before my appt this morning. Just one more thing to tack on to the "mia is angry" list. :/
