labor and afterbirth... what really happens?

edited March 2011 in Giving birth
Im having my first baby in July, and know nothing of what "really" happens during labor and afterbirth.. i hear stories, but not the whole story. What should i expect? What exactly is the afterbirth? Everything i find online talks about the birth only and no details! Im curious and want to know what happens before AND after, TMI is appreciated lol!

  • Very well explained!
  • Thanks! That was very helpful.. i just hear so many stories i just really needed a good explanation. How about pain after all said and done? Im sure theres gotta be pain/soreness for a while, especially trying to go to the bathroom afterwards
  • @homebirthadvocate does all this pain and ring of fire still apply if taking an epidural ?
  • Nd I wnt to kno if there is pain after too
  • There is some discomfort, how much depends on how the delivery went, if there was tearing or an episiotomy. I had vaginal births, and had an achy feeling in my pelvis, burning when i urinated, and cramps no worse than a period. I was mostly just tired. I breastfed after birth, and it makes your uterus contract, so i had some painful cramps during the first few days.
  • Just sorness after. Some mild cramping as your uterus contracts back into place. Muscles tightening again. Bleeding can stick around for days. Its like a heavy period for the first couple days then fades away. I was walking around and fine the day after I had my first. I was more soar and tired with my second. Took a few days to recover. But hardest part is really just giving birth. But hardest part really is just loss of sleep!! lol

  • With my first child I had an epidural and I really didn't feel any pain but everyone's pain threshold is different. I was up walking around 20 mins after I gave birth, I remember thinking of all the horror stories I heard, but it really wasn't that bad for me.
  • I was watching "one born every minute" and the nurse mentioned how the "ring of fire" felt. when the patient started to feel that pain, she kept screaming out "RING OF FIRE, RING OF FIRE!" hahaha! I had the epidural and it made my experience very plesant, no screams or anything, til it wore of afterwards and then i was a very crabby mommy, good thing i had that recovery time when the baby was getting his test runs and i had my husband to help.
