she's constantly feeding

edited April 2011 in Breastfeeding
I had my little girl on Tuesday and she latched on quickly to my breast on her own. She slept a lot in her first day and fed about every 4 hours. Then suddenly before I knew it she constantly wants to be fed! I've checked she's latching on properly, she has plenty wet and dirty ones, she normally winds well. I asked my midwife if it was normal and she said for the first few days it's establishing your milk supply and it'll settle soon when it's right for her. But has anyone else had this? I'm worried i'm not producing enough for her? I just want to make sure she's getting what she needs but it's disheartening and makes me think I should just change her to formula. :-(

  • Exactly what @HomeBirthAdvocate said baby is doing exactly what newborns do I know its hard work but stick with it you are doing brilliantly :)
  • She has greeny coloured poop and has had quite a few it's just she never seems satisfied and is latched on for over an hour and literally as soon as she comes off she wants to go back on.
  • Completely normal! Don't give up!! Your doing great. You will be so happy later that you didn't give up. The first couple days are rough, you make through that though and its smooth sailing from there. :-D
  • Yep. That's just her trying to get your milk to come in. It is tough, but totally normal. Make sure you're taking care of your nipples now or you'll get sore. Every few months my daughter would go through a period of a few days when I just couldn't get her off the boob. Then I would notice my milk changed, usually got thicker. Amazing how the body works!
  • @SheridanLM1991 when did you have your little girl!!!??? i had a girl also on tuesday:D and the strange thing is im having the SAME PROBLEM the only thing is i feel everyone around me wants me to formula feed her. my boyfriend is supporting the breastfeeding but thinks im doing it too often yet shes not filling up??? idt stress helps either :/
  • I want to breastfeed but I am not sure I am going to have the support my bf mom keeps telling him I should formula feed thats its going to be to hard. The only person that supports my decision is my mom but she doesn't live real close so just hearing this helps me know I can do it just like yall have
  • Don't give up! Everything sounds normal. It's still early...

Make sure that you are eating enough, and eating the right foods. I noticed when breastfeeding my son that my milk was thinner when I wasn't eating enough. It was visibly different (could tell when I pumped). Good luck!
  • Thanks for your advice guys. I had to stop cos it was really painful for me and I got an infection :-( but it was really helpful knowing her feeding was normal. :-)
