  • My little sister was born with three holes in her heart in 1996, and the doctors did not catch it. She was not doing well, so my mother demanded the doctor examine her. She was rushed up to Children's Hospital in Birmingham that day, and we were told if we had waited a day longer, she would not have made it because she was in heart failure.

The surgery ordeal is a long process, but it saved her life. One hole closed by itself, the other two did not and required surgery. Things she went through included being on a feeding tube at home, staples in her chest, and the doctors advised us not to put her into daycare afterward for the first few years.

However, with all of that being said, my little sister is about to celebrate her fifteenth birthday in June. She is healthy, and the only remaining reminder is the scar on her chest and yearly/bi-yearly cardiologist visit.

Since we dealt with UAB/Children's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, I might be able to recommend doctors for your sister to work with. The ones we worked with were some of the best. Also, if she choose to go to CH, the Ronald McDonald House will give her room and board for free since her little one will be under the care of UAB/CH.
  • I know you've gotten a lot of posts but I thought id share my story and what I know too. I was born with a hole in my heart, they did not find it though until my 1 year check up. From that point they monitored it hoping it would close up on its own or stay the same size. Well as I grew, so did the hole. At 7 years old I had to have open heart surgery. If I had not had the surgery I wouldn't have been able to be a normal 'active' kid. They said I could've started having heart attacks by the age 30. Since I had the surgery, there is nothing I have not been able to do and im as normal as can be... other than my irregular heartbeat :) they told my mom that all babies are born with holes in their hearts but that they close on their own... & mine did not. And now that I am pregnant they have done some extra tests on me, & baby. They actually did an echo on the babies heart & showed me the lttle hole in his heart but said that is 100% normal, that that is how mommy & baby share blood while in the whomb. So... now they are just going to monitor my lil guys heart after he is born to make sure he doesn't inherit my deffect. Phew... that was long:) sorry, but I hope it helps some!
  • @ghettobetty no, truly its fine that you told me, I'm a realist & so is my family, we would rather know the truth then have everything look good. I just feel bad for mixing it up.
  • @fingerscrossed Anything would be great thank you! We were at UAB, & its a gorgeous hospital & the people are absolutely amazing! They told her abt the Ronald MacDonald house too since her house is 80 miles away. I had to stay at one when my twins were born, so I could give her some info too, even though mine was in Va. Any info would def be passed on & appreciated. Thank you so much!
  • @ashleywiini16 thank you for the post! We knew that the hole is standard, I'm a paramedic so I told her that, but when I finally got there & heard it, I couldn't believe all the Docs before had missed it. Then looking at the scans, I was shocked. It is huge! I'm so glad that you & your baby are fine, all of these posts are really giving us relief.
  • My daughter is 20mos, and still has 2 holes in her heart. They just moniter hers. They say they are to small to do surgery on. But she gets sick all the time, like with colds and coughs, idk if its related or what. Good luck :)
