Anyone doing/did/considering CLOTH DIAPERS

edited April 2011 in Babies
I am seriously considering doing cloth diapers. And no, not cause I'm a "tree hugger" but because its not too hard and don't have to wash daily if you have a woolsoaker. Anyone else out there?

  • I did them. It's really not that much work...I just had a lot of weak stomach moments w this pregnancy! I wish u the best of luck if u choose to...its a great way to save some money if u stick to it.
  • Lol well this is only babe around. His daughter is ten and will do her own laundry. So I figure why not try. Minus the yucky diaper geenie and gross smelling old poo. I dunno. Guess looking into it more.

  • I tried it and I kept having blow out diapers if I didn't change ever 20 minutes. However this was 7 years ago and there seems to be so many more options out there for cloth diapnow. They have Velcro ones now so no more fear of pricking a wiggle baby ! The start up cost is alot. Other then that I don't know many details, I'm using disposables.
  • ? But do you try to scoop the poo in toilet before you launder??
  • I just couldn't imagine washing poopie diapers in the same thing I was my clean clothes in. Makes my skin crawl

  • Ohhhhhh my friend does it and I ask her questions about it but I hadn't gotten to that one yet. I did ask her what she did with the poo (attachment to the toilet that sprays it off). I wouldn't be opposed to doing it.
  • I'm doing it!! I just can't decide which brand. Fuzzi Bunz, BumGenius, or Kawaii. And for anyone who asked, you usually wash them separate from regular laundry. You even use different detergent. :)

  • @MrsForesee how much is it to start. We have a service here but only for weekly wash so not doing that. And to all thanks for your imput means a lot.
  • im DEFINITELY gonna do it! lol this is my first baby but ive changed MANY diapers in my lifetime! (seeing as i have 14 nieces & 10 nephews)... but i think that cloth diapers will be much easier, & cheaper! im having a baby shower & doing the diapers @ the door raffle so i will have PLENTY of disposable diapers if i choose cloth isnt for me, but im definitely gonna try! plus, hubby has a weak stomach, so if i leave the baby with him for a few, we'll be using disposables so he doesnt have to wash out a cloth diaper, or throw them away on accident (or on purpose) for that matter lol!
  • @uncaffinated_katie

How do you make detergent? Its been a while since chemistry101 for me :)

  • I really want to but we live in an apartment with a roommate and no washer and dryer. I plan on at least trying them out after we move out. I heard it is easier to potty train with reusable. And they have some really nice ones out now.
  • I really want to but I want the ones with the disposable liners. Do you know where I can find them?
  • I think babies r us has the disposable liners.
I had issues w my son leaking out of ours w the liners the pocket diapers came w...if I used the tri-fold diaper in the pocket he didn't but it made him sooo bulky :(
I'm planning on trying to use cloth w baby girl for a while after she is born anyway...maybe ill have more luck! We have the cloth wipes too...might wanna look into them too I'd u r going to cloth diaper
  • I love my cloth diapers only reason I went to disposible was my son was out growing the diapers faster then I could make them. I'm currently looking for a pattern for an all in one diaper so I don't have to constantly be at the sewing machine instead of playing with the babies

these are a great help for poppy diapers and since they are flushable. . .
  • @felicia89 i just found a two pack at babies r us for the "gDiapers" they are insanely awesome! and velcro no need to feel like the devil if you pin your baby. lol there are inserts that are both reusable and bio-degratable i'm gonna be doing this with no service all me and my man. we got this. :)
@beaded_bunny thanks for support-this seems more reasonable than hundreds nearly thousands on diapers now-a-days.
@KrazymomofAdrian we live in an apartment but the washers are right near us. and we are going to soak the diapers so its not like poo will be in the washers. i would do it hun.
@uncaffeinated_katie thanks for the advice. i needed all these opinions and PS, I freaking love your posts! LOL :)
@z_mommy_2009 you rock...people think it is so horrible!
thanks to all who answer my major questions it means alot, we have decided on doing cloth GDiapers. hugs to all!!!
  • I wouldn't mind that but my roommate probably doesn't want diapers soaking in the sink. And were stuck where we are until July.
  • @ckazfirst yay another gpant mommie I am very dedicated to using them this time around they are so cute and super simple ive bought a few already (my shower is tomorrow) amd love the quality go to bbisrus n check them out so excited to see someone else found the good luck mammaz :)

  • @Adfennell83 yeah I went to babies r us yesterday and it totally got me so excited. I'm on board 110% they are cute and actually cheaper there. And in Syracuse, the only place that has them in store. And @KrazymomofAdrian they have soakers don't need sinks n tubs. I would look around maybe you can. And roommates suck a$$ I remember that. Lol good luck.
  • I used them with my son who is now 2 and using them still. I prefer the bum genius brand, and I like to guy them from cottonbabies.com. Cloth diapers are really easy to use and not as gross as people tend to think. Make sure to do your research though and learn how to care for them so they last a long time and dont retain smells. The only problem we have had with them is needing an occasional babysitter and the babysitters around here are unfamiliar with using them.
  • @onemoreontheway I'm not too too worried about that. Just additional instructions for a babysitter. But I get it, that's why babysitting courses around here are awesome. That's what my step daughter has to take before we allow that. I'm so happy doing research and also choosing not to do a diaper service.
  • @ckazfirst we are from a tiny town in iowa I dont think many moms use cloth diapers around here and definitely no diaper service lol. It's fun doing the research and getting your first shipment of diapers. They make swimmer diapers for going to the pool or lake too, love them! I have heard that cloth diapering can help your child potty train sooner, we are hoping this is true with our son lol :)
  • My mom is going to stay home with my baby. She used cloth diapers for my sisters for a while, so I asked her what she thought about using cloth for my baby. We'll still keep disposable for going out, and maybe if baby has super funky runs one day. So she found these cloth diapers, and I think I will get them. The start up price is a little expensive, but I think it's worth it...

I like that the shell is separate from the liner and doesn't need to be washed with every use. And that they can grow with the baby.
  • and these are totally affordable compared to some I've seen!
