edited April 2011 in Pregnant
I got a one year old boy and having another one in 4 months! but I don't want to b buying diapers for both! I want to start potty training my oldest but how? I've heard that it's harder to train a boy then a girl. Any mothers out there who have boys and potty trained already? any ideas or tips? thanks! :)

  • Throw cheerios in the toilet and have him sink the "battle ships"
  • @Cmasat4 lol how cute! thanks! :)
  • I have a 2 1/2 yr old boy nd I'm due in 2wks with a girl...he was doin good til recently which my doc says its a jealousy thing but he does go on the Potty jst when we are in public or I'm home alone with him...if my bd is home with us he will go in his pull up Idk y but he refuses to go when he's home.. but also my bd won't actually show him how to stand nd go Idk y he says its violating lol I told him its not like he will remember 5 yrs from now how he learned to go Potty but he refuses...but they way I do it is I constantly ask him if he has to go nd if he goes I reward him with a couple m&ms or a fruit cup..also I tell him how he is such a big boy nd tht he is so awesome lol we give him high fives nd stickers nd also washable tattoos he loves this things...now thts as far as goin poop lol now him goin pee I have noo clue he jst won't go unless I bug him every 5min but I would love to hear some ways too lol
  • @Cmasat4 I'm afraid he will either grab the cheerieos or put other toys to pee on in there lol
  • My son wanted to be like daddy and just started copying him and I know its not fair but I didn't really train my older kids because they took it upon themselves at around 3. But my son was easier than my daughter she still doesn't wipe herself good eventhough I've shown her a trillon times.
  • My son is 3 and he goes to the potty. It was much easier to teach him how to sitting down and now he refuses to do it standing. I dont really mind since he is still pretty short and I dont want him rubbing his stuff on dirty public toilets lol so I have to pick him up when he wants to go. Depending on how tall your boy is try standing but it is harder because their aim is not to great lol
  • Dont feel bad @kailiasmomma some times my son will poop and not tell me until I see skid marks on his underwear!! I.show him how to wipe but he never does! Lol atleast your daughter tries hehe
  • I give my 3yr old a pee pee prize. i let him pick it out and he chose orange tictacs. so everytime he pees he gets 3 tictacs. He still wont poo in potty yet :/
  • My son will b three in june. He will go pee but not poop. We have a pee pee dance we do when he goes. And he gets a treat. We started by constantly asking him and putting him on his little potty. Even had him watch tv or eat his snack on it. So any ideaa on pooping would b great
  • @allie8955 For potty training a boy I heard if you go to the store and buy a toilet seat the attaches to the toilet it will make kids less afraid of the big potty, get him use to sitting on it and maybe if you don't already let him watch you and yr husband go the bathroom. And make going to the bathroom sound like something that is fun. Then when he gets comfortable with going on it. Have your husband then teach him how to stand up and go like a big boy and treat him like big boy. Number 2 will probably take longer for him to catch on. Have faith and patience
  • Add some dish washing detergent to the toilet and tell him to make bubbles. Lol
  • Also if he is 1 put him on the potty like every hour if you can and if he doesn't have to go repeat it 10mins later. The problem with potty training and why most parents wait so long is b/c potty training is an on going thing. day in day out. I work at a daycare and i have notice some parents just assume b/c they went once of twice that all of sudden there potty trained and they will start going on there own and also b/c parent s usually work so they cant be there to put the child on the potty every minute of the day.
  • my son yelled at me when I tried the cheerio thing he said "cheerios don't go in there they go in your mouth" he wanted me to take them off and got more mad when I flushed them for now he sits he's tried standing but for now he prefers to sit. he also had a hard time pooping on the toilet and when he did he would not let me flush it. some kids have a hard time letting it go, or so i'm told.

I rewarded him with stickers( 1 sticker for pee, 2 for poop) and once he filled up the entire chart he would get a train :)

  • thank you all to my mothers for the great advices!! so 1 is still a young age I assume? but it's still good to just introduce him to the potty. I told my husband that he's the one that will b teaching the hard part...i just got to get him started! :)

  • I've heard letting boys pee outside is a big help in potty training. I'm not sure what it is with guys and being outside, but they seem to like it at all ages!
  • My son poops in the Potty but he won't pee nd he sits not stands but in public places he goes pee nd poop
  • I worked with my son for forever. I tried so many different techniques and then someone told me that he will be ready when he's ready and one day he woke up and said I wanna be a big boy and put big boy undies on and never wore a pull up again.
  • I was gonna say 1s young for a boy..but if he's ready then go ahead ..I did boot camp potty training like ..I seen on dr.phil.
I had had butt naked for a few days and had him clean his mess..after awhile he started using the toliet. We got this poster for potty training and he pick out a sticker for every time he went..he loved it! The only problem I have now is him not keeping his pepe down and gets pee around the toliet..
he said it hard cus it shoots out like a shower and sprays everywhere! That's his reason for getting everywhere
