It helps prevent it if you lay them on their back to sleep, don't swaddle them at night, keep their room a comfortable temperature, don't put blankets or bumpers in their crib, don't let them over heat.
They have a device you can lay in the crib and put baby between. It has a small pillow on either side and baby goes between them. Help to keep them on their backs. You can get it at baby's r us.
They have an expensive thing you lay baby on. An alarm goes off if it doesn't detect any movement in a lil bit. Idr. Like 20 sec? I think its called angles wings or angle monitor.. idk. But its to catch if a baby stops breathing.
I have the same thing as @Leggs2011 has the angel care monitor it helps me to sleep the alarm goes of if it doesn't detect movement for 20 seconds my 16 month old is still using it lol I'm paranoid
