How does a first time mom know what diapers to buy before baby?

edited April 2011 in Pregnant
I heard its based on what fits best on your newborn and what kind doesn't irritate their skin but I wanna bulk up before my baby is born. So what do I do if I buy a ton of diapers that my baby doesn't mesh well with? :/

  • At Walmart you can bring them back and they will give you a gift card to get something else.:),
  • @amyduh I guess that's a good idea but I am nickle and dimin these days! Lol so I'd hate to buy both and then the baby not get along with half the diaper brands I bought. What a waste of money X(
  • Try getting the sensitive type diapers, I heard those are great for newborns.
  • Oops sorry wrong smiley face at the end of that lol and awesome! That's great to know walmart will give you a giftcard! :)

  • Either pampers swaddlers are good or Huggies little snugglers...both made for newborns. I would get to many newborn size cuz they grow out if them quick. Make sure to get sensitive wipes too, no scents! I hope that helps a little.
  • Don't buy a lot of newborn diapers because they grow out of those fast. Size 1 is 8-14lbs.
  • Im gonna start getting diapers soon..youll figure out diapers you prefer after the bby. Ill be getting huggies organic..some newborns and target brand ..there like huggies. My son wasn't irritated bt anything but lotions..and hoping this one isn't sensitive
  • I heard patents choice works great

I have a lot of younger family members and I guess after changing their diapers that helped make up my mind. My son is 2 and I used Huggies with him and I plan on using the same with this baby. Also parents choice is excellent during the potty training stages.
  • Huggies are the best in my opinion.
  • @sands3 thanks! :) now my next question is should I buy newborn sized clothes or 0-3 months? Im wondering how quick babe will grow out of it all. I don't want to buy a.bunch of newborn clothing and then they grow out of it before they even wear it all lol
  • My son was almost 9lbs so newborn clothes didn't fit him. It depends...I personally wouldn't buy a lot of newborn. They do grow quick.
  • I use huggies. That's what they sent me home with too.:)
I tried parents choice and they aren't that great. Super thin and doesn't hold much.

@CrazyBeautifulx0 I would buy atleast a week or two worth of newborn stuff. My baby is three weeks old and is still in newborn clothes and some of it is still to big and he was 7 pounds 4 ounces
  • Getting a gift card depends on who the associate is at the store. If you keep your reciept then you can get your money back or exchange them for something else. All stores have the same policy now for diapers, if you return them without a reciept you can only get a different size, brand, or quantity.
  • I took care of my nephew (like a second mom) n I always liked pampers swaddlers the best, im plannin on buying my baby that kind... If u want just buy a pack of each that u think would be good n whichever works best send someone to get u that kind (save thosr gift cards n cash gifts) ;;)
  • Diapers.com usually has a good deal for first time buyers. U can get the coupon code from baby magazines and sometimes shipping is free. However it seems like everytime my daughter went up a size we switched brands. Babies r us will have good deals on their brand. Once I got 250 diapers for$ 50 but I got a $15 gift card back so I used that to buy the huge box of wipes. Wipes are way cheaper when u buy them in bulk too.
  • I would just take the money you would spend on the diapers and get a giftcard. That way you don't have to worry about return policies and you're also covered if you have an unexpected expense...last time i'd planned to breastfeed and ended up having to buy bottles and formula.

For clothes i'd buy a months worth of newborn sizes and the rest 0 to 3.
  • @laura536 that could deff work, good idea ;)
