They are definitley not necessary. I had one and used it mostly for storage. I'm usually in the living room with my baby and floor/couch with a blanket or changing pad always works great...and I've never had any back problems because of it. If you still want one I would recommend the pack n play with the "table" on top for when baby is younger. I did use this the first couple months for naps and occasional changing.
Its a waste inless it has a dresser,,,ur not going to want to run to it to change ur baby every 10 mins,,, and when ur so wore out from being up all night ull use the couch,the floor a chair or ur lap,,,, trust me I begged for one but once I got it I never used it ,,, I only used it to throw sruff on
Mine comes on top of the dresser...its a place for the mat but everyone says I probably won't use it but I'm going all out cuz it's my first baby I will decide what is uselss on baby #2....Happy Easter
