  • Hello! I have 4 yorkies and I never had them around babies or kids. So I don't know they gonna react to a new baby when sept comes. But the know that its something going on with me cause they cuddle with me more. And my big baby Diva always wanna be around me more. But ima try the baby doll trick to see how they will react. But they well train and listen to me. Hope the doll trick works.
  • I have 4 dogs and they have all been around kids. My oldest who is 16 yrs old is the only one who has been around babies. He was always protective of the babies but that was awhile ago. But all my dogs are very well trained so I think they will be ok. But I heard that closer to the end of ur pregnancy u should wear the baby lotion ur going to use so they get used to the smell. And to do the blanket thing too.
  • @dream: one of my dogs clings to me all the time too since I've been preggo. He won't leave me alone!
@ar1020; ill try the lotion thing.
My dogd do confirmation and performace competitions so there is no room for misbehaving, but you just never know how they will react. Thanks so. Far for all the awesome tips. Congrats and best of luck to everyone!!!
  • These are all great suggestions. I have the same worry. thanks @dobiemomma for asking. Now we both have great options. Congrats :)
  • @casnleslie ur welcome! There r always those horror stories n I doubt my dogs would act crazy but better safe than sorry! Congrats to u as well!!!
  • I had a Pitt and a German shepherd when I got pregnant with my son and was worried about them since they hadn't been around children at all. I downloaded videos of babies making all sorts of sounds and played it alot for them. Did the babydoll thing too. My vet suggested that we also desensitize them as much as possible by pulling on their ears, tail, skin, feet and lips. Firmly but not hurtful! My dogs did fantastic even when Ethan got to the exploration stage. You have to remember, however, that dogs are animals and cannot be trusted completely. Don't be completely paranoid but don't give an option for hurts on either side!
  • @outlaw_sphinx I have 2 dobermans n my daughter tackles them better than a pro football player so they are use to "love abuse" as we call it, but downloadn noise is a perfect idea. A cryn newborn is far different than a toddler tantrum!
  • I had another baby come to visit....my dogs are used to kids but not babies....I am currently 8 weeks and 4 days along......I sit with a blanket over me and a pillow in the area the baby will be in......trying to change the dogs routine before baby comes home and not showing them as much attention in hopes that they will be used to it before baby comes home....I don't want them to think that the baby being here is the reason for the change in life so I am starting now.....my dogs are lap dogs JACK RUSSELS and they were the babies for so long.....so starting early before they know what is going on is a great idea this way they won't take it out on baby
  • @dobiemomma- that's for sure! My Pitt died last year and now I have a great dane/Pitt mix, a great dane/lab mix and my German shepherd. My son lays on them all and plays rough! I have caught so much crap from my one sister in law about my "aggressive" breeds and it just enrages nme. She won't let her kids come to my house. If someone was to attack me or my son then I do not doubt they would be aggressive but to blame an entire breed for one dog being raised badly. Well that is just stupid. I love dobermans. They are fantastic dogs. However my husband would throw me out if I got another animal lol
  • @outlaw_sphinx I hear u! My family flipped a lil when they found out I got a dobe, but its the owner not the breed. I love pitts, n shephards, and u r darn right if put in the situation to defend me or my fam, I hope u can run like hell bc my dogs would attack, but other wise yes they are Huge babies. My mom sounds like ur sis, she hates all bully breeds except mine. And I soo want to get another Dobe but like ur husband, myine would be pissed! Ill sneak 1 home one day. Once its in the house, I can't get rid of it!
  • @dobiemomma- lol@once its in the house..that's how all of mine happened. I had two horses for awhile and needed some barn cats..after the horses were gone they migrated inside. The only animal I consciously sought out was my skunk Mr. Stinky that my husband got for my anniversary last year. He's been around my nice sil's baby..but they only visit so not sure how thrilles he's going to be at my new arrival. Since I got pregnant he's been acting strange around me. One minute he's clingy and the next avoiding me like the plague. All of the cats and dogs follow me everywhere and all compete to lay on me. I look like Dr. Dolittle
  • Omg u sound like me! That's what my fam calls me! I can't pass up any stray n I want to adopt everything!
  • Yep..I've tried talking my hubby into using our property for a sanctuary/rescue since we have 7 acres and 3 barns. He just says sure honey but you'd never let anyone else adopt them! Haha..sadly, its true
  • Thank you so much for asking this. We have a female boston terrier and im not really scared of her mean aggressive but getting jealous and accidently scratchin our daughter. Shes still a baby as well so shes very loving and always in our laps lol
  • @nykolle its important that u get a good trainer now before the baby. I took my 2 dogs twice a week to classes for a year and I stil practice at home. U don't want an out of control puppy with a newborn. Plus a well behaved dog is a pleasure to own
  • @Outlaw_Sphinx and @dobiemomma I'm with you guys. I have a rotweiler mix, great dane shepard mix, american red nose pit and a beagle black lab mix. A lot of ppl tell me I should be concerned with having my baby around them especially the pitbull. Buy they are all such sweethearts. They are trained to attack on command. And none of them have ever been aggressive towards ppl. My pitbull loves ppl. All he ever wants to do is give kisses lol. And they have been around kids. Only the rot mix has been around babies and he used to be very protective of them. He even let them sit in his face eventhough he couldn't breathe lol
  • We set up most of the baby stuff before we brought home our daughter and let our dog explore all of the new "toys". We brought an extra blanket home from the hospital that our baby had used and smelled like her. When we got home, we brought the dog in and gave her a lot of attention. We put the blanket in the bouncey seat and let the dog sniff around. After she calmed down, we took our daughter, in her carseat, and put her on the floor so our dog could come say hi to her new sister. She came over, sniffed a little and laid down next to the car seat. We did the same thing with my son. Our dog has been great, just be sure to give the dog special time when the baby is sleeping so she still feels loved.
