pacifiers while nursing...

edited April 2011 in Breastfeeding
Wondering if anyone has had experience (good or bad) w their child having a pacifier when they were still being nursed. My daughter (born 4/27) currently enjoys using my nipple as a pacifier...she will suck and fall asleep but she's not drinking /swallowing. My nipples r getting so sore from her sucking-the longer she's attached/more she falls asleep, the worse her latch is. When I go to adjust/take my nipple out she wakes up.and we start the process all over again. I know that after I had my son the nurses told me giving baby a pacifier may poorly affect nursing and that baby might not want to nurse at all then. I want to nurse but my nipples...ow! Looking for any stories of how ur kids were w nursing after receiving a pacifier. Thanks

  • my dr and most of hte breastfeeding material say to shy away from pacifiers and bottles until six weeks of succesful breastfeeding as to not confuse the baby, due to the different type of sucking behavior needed for each. I havent breast fed yet due july 2nd but i thought id just give some input

I think we tried using a pacifier for the same reason. It is a different sucking motion than nursing. Our lactation consultant advised against the paci until a few weeks old. But I can tell you if your nipples are hurting (and her latch is right) there's a product called "nipple butter" from Earth momma, angel baby that's excellent and you can use the gel "coolie" pads in between nursing. My nipples went from cracked and bleeding to soft and nice in about 4 days with those two products.

If ur still at the hospital I would make sure to talk with the lactation consultant to ensure her latch is right. I was aiming too high in her mouth and it was causing me problems. Once we got her latch corrected it was a totally different experience. You should be comfortable enough to fall asleep while your nursing.
  • My bf coach is against it she says it lowers ur supply to have them use a pacy but ladies on here don't agree ...I never breastfed I'm going with what I was told they lady was also preggo and breast fed all of her kids
  • The nurse at my birthing class said if your going to use pacifiers to use the one with the nipple thing going slightly up that its very close to what the baby does when nursing also it helps reduse sids
  • My son (born 4/27/08) used a paci while I was breastfeeding and he did just fine. He never had a problem latching on and by his weight the Dr said he was getting enough. I only breastfed for 4 months, but that was my choice, not because of him. Good luck!
  • Yeah my daughter used a paci and breast feed but she put everything in her mouth. Im going to.use the paci again i rather her not go on the breast then take a chance with sids. I can always pump and put her on a bottle. My moms friend recently lost get grand baby from sids and they say paci help with sids.
  • I used one with my daughter no problems I didn't even know it was advised against.... Neither of my children really loved their binkies anyways but it didn't effect my breastfeeding....
  • I've been using my pinky for now to help her sleep when she's not sucking to eat. Think ill talk to the lactation consultant to make sure but I'm pretty sure she is patching properly...til she falls asleep. Thanks ladies
  • So she came back into the room this m
  • This morn w a pacifier in her lil crib thing. And she is still nursing amazingly. Yay!
  • My youngest one used a paci and nursed with no problems.
  • I used a paci with my daughter while breastfeeding and she did fine. The only thing is I had to buy ne that looked like a nipple cause she wouldn't grab any others!!!
  • I used one with both of my kids and they still nursed fine. Though my daughter traded hers for her thumb at a month. She got bacterial meningitas and had to go back to the hospital spent 8 days there I never left her side and they had to let me stay because she refused to take a bottle
