ultrasound & baby weight question...

Okay, so I went in for an ultrasound to measure my cervix & I told her I wanted to find out what my baby weighs (about), she told me that all babies at this point weigh about the same, that they don't start gaining more, or less weight yet. I was 29wks 4days. And she said my baby should weigh between 2.5-3 pounds. Well after she did all the measurements she checked to see what it said his weight was & it said almost 4 pounds & she said 'hmmm... well he's weighing a bit 'big'...'. After she just told me they all weigh about the same, that's a whole pound difference. So my question is, does it just mean she was wrong & at this age they in fact CAN gain weight faster, OR that maybe im a little further along & might have my baby a little sooner? Anybody know? Or has anyone had the same type of thing & their doc tell you different?

  • I had a ultrasound n my bub is around 3lb 9 I think this could b right is this Ur 1st bub my kids have all been big
  • Theres no way to tell how much a baby weighs exactly just by ultrasound she could have been ounces or a pound off. It could just mean your going to have a big baby and if that is the case your doctor may induce if he feels the baby is getting to big.
  • babies are different for every woman. And they also grow faster in some weeks opposed to other weeks.
I had an ultra sound 2 wks ago....my dr said baby should weight 7?5-10 oz and she was already 1 lb!! But I wont suspect anything until my last u.s.
  • @cheekyerin yes its my first, how far along were you when your baby weighed 3lb 9oz?
@angelsmommy I know its just an estimate, but to be a whole pound off seems crazy when they are only a few pounds as it is. Ounces off I could understand. I hope he's not just going to be a big baby, even though I have a feeling that might be the case. I've heard horror birthing stories about big babies lol. Id be fine with a little 7 pounder:) or maybe he'll slow down his weight gain... fingers crossed!
  • i know at 26 weeks they told me my baby weighted 1pd 11oz
  • @survivormommie3 I think this was my last ultrasound, & it was only because I was having contractions why I got it, so I wont get another one:( unless something goes wrong & im hoping that doesn't happen of course lol.
@angelsmommy if you don't have another ultrasound how do they know what baby weighs toward the very end??
  • My last baby who now 21 months was weighing 3pounds 14ounces @ 29weeks 6days and I was induced 12 days early and she weighed 9pounds 7ounces but she was my easiest birth. I had her all natural and 4 hours of labor 2pushes. I used a birthing ball during labor which was so great and much better than staying stuck in a bed. This baby was measured at 29 weeks 3days and he is weighing at 3poinds 4ounces. My doctor moved my due date up 5 days since my last two ultrasound has him measuring a little bigger. But my doctor told me that he would probably be in the 7 pound range but that babies put on most of their weight in the last weeks of pregnancy. I've always had big babies so I am hoping this baby will be on the smaller side. We'll see.
  • Im 35 weeks so further along but at my last scan on wed i was told that baby weighed about 7lb 8oz which is big!! I have to have a scan every week now to keep an eye on how big baby gets!
  • @melinda326 wow! Well... that makes me feel a little bit better:) at least that the birthing wasn't too bad. I hope if it gets to the end & my lil man is still measuring big they will go ahead & move my due date up a little bit. I hope you have a smaller babe this time around!:)
@denois that is big! That's as big as I want my baby to be at birth! Lol... you poor thing. Id be scared... can you tell its. My first & the whole birthing process kind of frightens me?! Lol
  • @ashleywiini16 that was Thursday i was just 28 weeks In past iv had scan to see how big bubs is they say it can be 500grams either way
  • They told my best friend her baby was 9lbs he was born a week later and weighed 6lbs5oz at 38 weeks. Sometimes closer to the end if they will order a growth study if they think the baby is measuring big, small, etc.
  • @ashleywiini16 its also my first so i to am scared!! I was hopin for a nice small ish baby around the 7lb mark but not much chance of that now!!
  • Because babies grow at different rates they usually won't change a due date late in pregnancy. The earlier a scan is done the more accurate the projected edd is. Also, as someone else mentioned scans can actually be up to a lb off. So don't worry just yet. Good luck! Hope everyone stays healthy!
