gestational diabetes

edited May 2011 in Pregnant
I go in for my glucose testing in a week. What are some of the risks for getting gestational diabetes? Someone told me that a big baby could put me at risk for it? Idk and just want some answers:)

  • Still born if you Dont maintain your sugars(if u have it)
  • Big baby is one of them, but usually only if the diabetes isn't well controlled. I have GD and am having her next Monday and she measures right at 7 pounds, so she's pretty perfect if I do say so myself!

You should Google it because even though I was reading up on it last night, the only other risk I recall was getting full blown diabetes later in life. I think I'm just in shock knowing I'm having her in less than a week lol, so my mind is kind of one tracked today. :D
  • @bke913 congrats! I can't wait until I have a week left:)
  • i had to have the GTT twice! once at 24 weeks and it came back that i didnt have it! then again this morning, because at my last scan on Wednesday baby was measuring at 7lb 8oz and i was only 35 weeks!! i get my results tomorrow and i am really hoping that its all clear!
  • My mum had GD with me. She had to keep an eye on her sugar intake but other then that she didnt have any real trouble with it. They enduced her/me 2 weeks early because they were worried Id be too big asd all baby does in the last 2 weeks is grow but all went well I was normal size and mum and me were both perfectly healthy. The only thing I will advise is after baby is born dont go to crazy with sweet things as having GD can increase your chances of developing normal diabetes later in life, which my mum sadly now has.
  • Will bby have diabetis when born?
  • I don't think so and it normally goes away for the mumma after the birth. I don't have it and mum didn't develope it fully for years afterwards.
  • Thanks for all the info! I just didn't know what causes you to get or have gd so I figured id ask my preglys:)
  • @denois I'm sorry you had to take it twice! My baby is measurin 1/2 a pd ahead already but we will see at my next ultrasound how everything is going. His kidney was enlarged at 20 weeks hopefully its better :(
  • Try not to worry too much if you do have/get GD like I said mum had it with me and we were both fine. It just means adapting your diet a little n let's face it you have to do that when pregnant anyway. It's not a nice thing but its one that can be dealt with :-)
  • @bambi_bump yeah I'm not worried but I was trying to learn a little more about it:) are there signs leading up to it?

I have GD and have to check my blood sugar 4 times a day. The only hard part about it is your highs and lows and learning what you can and can't eat. I was seeing a dietian and now my doctor has me taking glyburide twice a day. Its not that hard you just have to be mindful of the things you eat. With the glyburide you can't let your blood level get down pass 80 or you will start feeling shaky and nervous. But don't worry tooooooo much about it, like I was you just have to take it in strides and from day to day if you have it. I am now almost 36 weeks and was told by my doctor they may have to induce me because my joy was weighing in at 5lbs 13oz at my 34 week checkup, but having heard anything else about it yet. So just read up on it a little to educate yourself.
  • @stack2 I think that'll be the hardest part..minding what I eat and checking my levels lol I hate needles of any kind. Good luck with your littlw one:)
  • And I will definately read up on it some!
  • @08lilmomma11 glad I could be of help.
  • Im worried about getting it because my mom had it with me ... are there things o can do to prevent it?
  • @kritten_octoberbby- there is really not much you can do. You just have to watch what you eat and make sure you don't take in tooo many sweets or things that have a lot of carbs. The carbs and the sweets will make it high. And if you do get it don't worry too much, there are meds, and lots of information to help you help control it. Since I found out I have it I have been well educated about what I can do to prevent high blood sugar levels. At first it gets frustrating, because you are sticking yourself and seeing a number higher then what is is suppose to be, but after you find out what's making it high you can learn to control it.
  • @stack2 Can it do anything to hurt you baby or is only hurting yourself?
  • @kritten_octoberbby It will make your baby big, a few problems when he/she is born and probably harder to deliver, but you are only pricking your finger to check your levels.
  • Thanks for all the info:)
  • The baby can also be born with large shoulders and if you habe a vaginal birth it can cause shoulder distosia (sp) for the baby in addition to a high birth weight.
  • I check my sugar level four times a day n do insulin twice a day. N have to watch wat I eat. Theres lots of risk, baby too big to push out, baby too small, having a c section. My stupid doc told me baby could die :( that really scared me, or baby can come out blind but lets jus pray for the best. Good luck
