edited May 2011 in Health
So I went to my 38 week appointment today, and I asked to be checked to see if I'm dialating any well they told me no because I'm a positive carrier for gbs! I'm so pissed all I want to know is if I'm close to delivery but now I get this news which is not good at all I'm just really upset and scared...any of you other ladies carriers?

  • What is gbs? Sorry.
But I'm sorry u are, I hope everything goes okay
  • I have had it with both my children, and everything came out fine.I started dialating at seven months with my kids, so I dunno what gbs had to do with dialating
  • I tested positive for it as well during my first pregnancy. I made the mistake of googling it (such a bad idea) but it ended up not being a big deal. Just some extra stuff going through the iv. :)
  • Group B Strep...1 out of every 5 women is a carrier.. its a bacteria that can be transferred to your baby during labor, its usually in the vagina so they won't check you with risk of transfer, you also have to be on iv antibiotics 4 hours before delivery
  • I'm pissed because I can't be checked if I'm dialating or not, I would like to know!
  • GBS never stopped me from dialating. They just gave me some antibiotics during labor.
  • And they still checked me
  • I have it was very scared when I found out now I'm not so worried my theory is at least they caught it and can give me the needed meds.
  • I had it with both of my boys and was always checked
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I too am GBS+ and am currently in labor. I received the meds and it was no big deal.

I know it's exciting to get checked, but remember that the size of your cervix isn't a huge indication of much. I have only been a tight 2 for weeks and finally my water broke this morning. Some women are a 3 or 4 for weeks and end up being induced or don't got into labor until after their due date. Just be patient momma, I know first hand how hard it is, but your day will come and it makes things a million times better!
  • @bke913 thank you maybe I'm just upset because I found out I was +, that I couldn't get check (even when I have increase pelvic pressure, n braxton hicks), & my midwife broke her hand so she is not coming back to work for 4-6 weeks n since I'm 38 weeks it means she won't be delivering my baby, some other midwife I never met before today will! Just some news I didn't like hearing especially all in one day...but congratulations on your baby! Good luck
  • It didn't affect how you dilate, but every tine you're checked for dilation there is a risk for infection to the baby, so if you're a carrier the baby is at even higher risk for infection.

Being gbs+ should not stop them from checking you., especially if you request it. There is only a risk to the baby after your water has broke, and with taking the necessary precautions of having antibiotics during labor, there is a slim chance baby will be effected. I had it with my first, and I was still checked at every appointment without questioning. I was just tested for it yesterday at my 36 week appointment and checked as well. I don't see why they stop checking you just because you tested positive, it really makes no sense.
