Amniotic Band

edited May 2011 in Pregnant
So I have to see a specialist because I have an amniotic band. I guess I have a band on my placenta and it increases the chance of the baby having a cleft lip or palette, or a deformity of the hand, feet, or limbs.

I have my appointment next Monday in the morning. Think happy thoughts for me, please. Cause I'm having problems doing it myself.

  • I've never heard of that but will definantly pray that your baby is born perfectly healthy.
  • Thanks guys. I am feeling much less depressed, waiting for the results before I freak out. Maybe my baby will just have something minor that some simple plastic surgery will fix.

Good news is I get another ultrasound, right? And some Ben & Jerry's Snickerdoodle ice cream was just what the midwife ordered to help pick me up.
  • Has anyone else heard of or had an amniotic band? I was hoping someone would have some experience on the matter.
  • @Jwigs I haven't had any experience with an amniotic band, but I know when I first signed up to Pregly, I was looking for some support with what I was going through. I have what's called Polyhydramnios and it's very rare but everything seems to be okay. I think there was one girl on here who had experienced it, and it wasn't even her that had it, it was her mom that had it when she was pregnant with said Pregly user.

DO NOT Google it. I made the mistake of doing so and for months I cried daily, thinking my baby was going to be severely deformed, not going to make it, and all sorts of other things.

I'll make sure to lift you up in prayer and keep you in my thoughts. Keep us up to date with what you find out. I'm sorry you're having to worry, it's so hard not to. I feel your pain.
  • Oh, I googled it and scared the hell out of myself. I recommend NOT googling it if you ever have one, and tell anyone you know with one not to do it. There are scary statistics out there. That's why I am looking for real life experiences or knowledge. Hoping to further reassure myself that my baby boy isn't doomed to have three limbs.

I can handle the cleft lip or pallet, or webbed digits. A little plastic surgery and he will be fine. It's just the scarier stuff I read about that I need proof are extreme examples and not likely to be my case.
  • tthanks, @bke319. I'm hoping for the best and trying not to stress. But it is on the back of my mind 24/7. Thankfully I have an ultrasound on Monday morning and should have a better idea of what's going on after that. hopefully it will bring reassurance and ease my fears, and I'll be LOLing at my anxiety by Monday afternoon.
  • I feel so helpless. What if he's all tangled up? And there's nothing I can do to help him. I just have to sit here, trying to stay positive, and hope I'm over reacting. This has to be one of the worst feelings in the world.
  • @jwigs
Everything has a way of working out. Ill pray for peace til monday and an answer at your ultrasound. Something to ease your mind and take away the what ifs and fears. Best of luck to you. Keep us posted.
  • (((hugs))) I know until you truly know the diagnosis your only working yourself up thinking the worse. It is the worse feeling in the world, the unknown! hoping your baby will be born healthy and problem free!!
  • Praying for you :)
  • Awww hunny! Prayers are with you. Its the waiting that's so hard. Be encouraged!
  • Guess who freaked out for no reason? I always tell people not to. And I did it. Hard core.

Turns out a little misdiagnosis by my first ultrasound tech just earned me a second ultrasound with a clearer look at my baby! There is nothing tangled around my baby, if there had been, it would have been very obvious at that first ultrasound. The tech at the specialist place said it is likely just a piece of tissue, forgot what she called it, and that it is very common and normal.

My baby boy flashed his janks again, too. What an exhibitionist! And he was kicking and punching the whole time. So awesome. We got even better pictures and you can so clearly see his nose, mouth, and chin in the profile!
