Only children

edited May 2011 in Parenting
Anyone planning on only having one child or are you an only child? Just wondering what people think about it and want to hear about experiences.
I am pregnant with my first and only plan on having one but I'm considering all of my options.

I probably should also mention that we have temp custody of my nephew (11 yr old) and we plan on adopting him next year. But of course they won't be siblings and he calls us "auntie" and "uncle"

  • I'm an only child from my mom.its not fun sometimes.I wish I had someone I can talk to about things and hang out with.so Ik what it feels like.it can be lonely.
  • I guess I probably feel like having one because I grew up in a large family and it was to chaotic for me. The grass is always greener....
  • Im havin only one but her cousins are all around th same age w 3 years bein th oldest & we all live together so they'll basically be growin up together and treat each otger as siblings
  • @I_anaya That's nice so she'll have someone to play with
  • I'm an only child. Mom tryed for more but after many miscarriages I'm still an only living child. As for me & hub. I thought our daughter was gonna be an only child but after 11yrs. I'm pregnant again. But she's not happy with not being an only kid. I think ones ok. But I always wanted more. It depends on you & hub. Nothing wrong with only 1.
  • @one5one Thanks for your input. At first I didn't want any and now just one. I'm 33 and don't have much time to think about it.
  • I'M 21 AND I'VE MADE MY MIND UP THAT SHE WILL BE MY ONLY CHILD BECAUSE I GREW UP WITH FIVE SIBLINGS ON MY MOM SIDE. AND 8 ON MY DADS SIDE... IT'S JUST CRAZY LOL. I'VE ALWAYS HAD TO STAND UP FOR ALL MY YOUNGER SIBLINGS. IT WAS TOUGH I CAN ADMIT THAT I NEVER NEEDED FRIENDS. OR WASN'T LONELY. MAYBE DOWN THE LINE FIVE SIX SEVEN YEARS I WOULD RECONSIDER.. IDK

@Supermommy89 Sounds crazy. We only had 4 in our family and that was too much for me to handle (I was the oldest).
  • My sister and I are 16 years apart and she moved out when I was a toddler, I was lonely and hated being alone so my mom adopted my other sister :)
  • @cdswim yea it was crazy. I was known as Jimmy little sister my entire life I'm almost 22 and they still say aren't you jimmy little sister.. lol omg and sharing rooms, no privacy, hand me ups and downs, lol I could go on.. Kids used to always test us to see if one fight do they all fight.
  • @supermommy89 Oh yeah..... the fights. I definitely don't miss those. My mom used to wear a belt around her neck to keep us under control.
  • @mommabee13 I understand. My nephew has been living with us as an only child for 3 years and I can tell that he gets a little lonely. But I think that he also enjoys getting all of our attention.
  • I think an only child is good if they have someone close to there age that they can really connect with. I work at a school and the only children children drive me bonkers. They would rather sit with adults then play with kids, they dont know how to connect with other children or there down right mean. I grew up in a big family tho, im in the middle of 10 and I loved it.
  • @cdswim Lol @belt around the neck.. Our house was like an WWE tournament.. girls vs boys, youngest, vs oldest, big vs small, we did it all.. Even now until this day we fight when we are all together. My oldest bro walked up on me in the kitchen and slapped my stomach then says "OH MY GOODNESS... I SO FORGOT .. I'M NOT INTO CHILD ABUSE.. YOU REALLY NEED TO WEAR A PROTECTIVE BELLY GUARD AROUND ME.." he's so used to it he keeps forgetting I'm pregnant.. I'm so against going around him.. he may just tackle me.. lol
  • @cdswim anytime ill be 31 in Nov. Had my first at 19. She was a surprise. I had wanted another one & so did my kid. But due to health issues & my weight it wasn't possible. And i became content with my child being older, doing things on her own. But as I neared my 30s that damn clock started ticking. I lost a lil more lbs and went off the pill in Oct. We got preggy in Jan. Totally unexpected that it came so fast. Had some fertility issues thanks to pcos. But with us older ladies we don't have a choice to wait. Our bodies don't work that way. And I know I can't wait another 10 yrs for more. But your content with 1child. Go for it!! I myself would like one more afterthis one. But that's me now. After baby's arrival I mite be content w 2 kids. Only time & that damn clock can tell. How many weeks are you? I'm almost 19.

Well you don't have to pop out more if your nit wanting more! One can be enough for most people! Congrats on your baby!
  • Thanks!! Congrats to you too! I'm sure I'm going to spend the next year thinking about it.
