Bathing your Child.

edited May 2011 in Parenting
So I give my 8 month old a bath every other night. I have friends and family telling I need to bath her every night. I barley get to shower myself. I am a stay at home mom nd this is my first child so I am learning plus being pregnant again on top of it, my husband is currently at AIT. It is a little crazy.
How many times a week do you give your child a bath?
Any tips on how to shower your self when your the only parent around?

When they are small, we did every other day to every 2 days (depending on if we went out & if they had explosive diapers) when they got older we upped it to every day; walking age; since they got into more things & got dirtier.

@Tricesbaby I didnt think about toys, I will be trying that tomorrow.

@mam0811 High chair is a good option to. She hates her swing now I have tried that.

and everyone else thank you for your input on how often you bath your child. I thought I was doing okay but of course everyone thinks because it is my first I should listen to them about how they did it. My little girl and I stay home all day and play half the time and barley gets dirty so I thought every other night was good

  • When mine were little it was every other day. I used to take a bath with them it was good bonding and we both got clean. When they slept I washed my hair quick in thw sink or over the edge of the tub
  • i bath my son every other day or whenever he looks too dirty lol i dont think its good to wash kids everyday as it washes away natural oils in the skin and my sons skin is sensitive so a bath every day would end up drying him out and he would end up with irritated skin... but they do smell soooo yummy when they are all nice and clean...
  • i bath my daughter once sometimes twice a day. been brought up like that so just use to it. i can't stand the thought hoping into bed without having a bath or shower. thats just me. my daughter and i have baths together. bonding time and gets two things done at once
  • We bathe our toddler every 2-3 days (she's had problems with excema and that's what her pediatrician recommended) at the hospital and in our new city. My mom actually had a crying fit that we didn't bathe her every day. I had to calmly explain. I'm her mother and I get to choose how often she bathes. This is what her doctor said to do so we ate doing it that way. Smh at my overdramatic momma.

They have mesh bathtubs that are pretty compact that you could put in the shower with you if you choose to bathe her with you. At that she my daughter hated baths but couldn't be left alone so I would put her in her bouncy seat in the bathroom while i showered or I would shower when she took a nap.
  • I used to put my youngest in the bouncy seat and then kept popping my head out :)
  • Put her in her chair in the bathroom while u get showerd, or have a quick bath with her :)

That sounds reasonable. How dirty can a baby get anyway? It's a baby! Not like it's going out and digging ditches.
  • I tried a her highchair yesterday and she did wonderful. Thanks for the help everyone. :)
  • My kids are 2 and 4, they get a bath every other say, unless one is needed because they got dirty playing outside. I am sure this summer it will be everyday due to more outside play and swimming.
  • When my son was a baby, I bathed him every 2-3 days, when he started walking I bathed him every day but only soap every other day unless he's gotten dirty. Sounds like you're doing great, mama! Keep it up, and go easy on yourself! You've got a full plate! ;)
  • Doctors (or at least mine) recommend every other day at least. As long as you wash hands and face after eating and diapers aren't too extreme exactly how dirty can they be.
  • I take showers at nap time my alone time
  • My son gets a bath quite often *he loveshim some water *. He only gets soap every third day or so. Soap is so bad for the skin and frankly when he was a baby it was hardly nessesary now that he's a toddler the soaping has increased. The fragrance in the soap I use is pretty heavy so he still smells of soap on nonsoap days
  • my lil guy has exzema and i only give him a bath every 2 days and thats drs orders.. cause the infant skin can dry out quickly.. so dont listen to others you know what your doing... :-D i was doing every other day and the dr said every 2-3 days is fine.. just ask you pediatrician and they will tell you its not necessary and could possibly be bad for your baby.. i mean if they have a serious blow out of course.. that demands an immediate bath but thats just about it..
  • My son is 3 1/2 and he's a freak about playing outside everyday. He gets bathed everyday sometimes twice aday.
  • Every other day.. Bring the swing or playpen in the bathroom with you so u can peep at baby while u shower
  • Every other day. Sometimes it ends up being 2 1/2 days if we have a really hectic day and showers happen during nap time.luckily she doesn't wake up to the shower bc her bedroom shares a wall with the shower wall in the bathroom and her crib is on that wall
  • My son gets a shower with me most of the time...its too hard for me to bend over the tub to bathe him
  • Every other day is fine. Everyone IRL will tell you how they did it, you do what feels right for you, and hang in there mama!

Lmao @blueberrysmom that "going out and digging ditches" comment made me laugh out loud.

  • Mama2JandBaby - me too! I just pictured Blueberry in a little hard hat out by the side of the road. :-j
