I need your help making an argument against pitocin

edited May 2011 in Giving birth
yesterday at my 20 week ultrasound/appt my fiance brought up the question of pitocin to one of my midwives. basically its something neither of us want me to be given in the hospital while im in labor. she told us that most of the time with their patients they do give them pitocin to help speed up labor and that unless either of us are informed medical professional its not something she would argue with us about (basically because to her, we don't know what we're talking about). my personal feeling though is that unless there is a true medical reason, not them just wanting me to have the baby as quick as possible so i can get the hell out of there, there should be no reason for them to give me the drug.
soooooo if any of you would like to share personal experiences or statistics that might help me, that would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ya know I'm not sure but I don't want it either so they told me to just wait out labor at home n when I'm more dilated come in n say I don't want it n they're usually fine
  • My midwife doesn't use pitocin or any other labor inducing drugs. I'm suprised your midwife does. I though the whole point of going to a midwife was so you could avoid unnecesary medical intervention. I think @homebirthadvocate will agree with me on this. Also pitocin can make the contractions much harder on the mom and baby and can raise the baby's heartrate and distress level leading up to a c-section that you probaly wouldn't have to had in the first place...
  • You have every right to decline pitocin dont let them forve that on you i plan on doing this drug free unless something goes wrong but if u dont want it dont do it
  • I had my daughters in 4 & half hrs and 2 hrs 15 min w out it. Its unnecessary! Your body is made to do this w out interference. Let it! You are allowed to refuse it. If they give it anyway thats illegal. Tell her that any drug given to you while you and your husband are present and fully capable of agreeing or disagreeing w it than you do not want it unless requested. Convenience is not a reason to distribute a drug.
  • @ebbry89 & @Mommyof4girls she told me that if i were to decline the pitocin they would have to send me home, which scares the hell out of me...like what if im in active labor?
  • Pitocin is used to speed up labor to take stress off of the baby, remember ur lil ones go thru a lot of stress too so the longer they're in the birth canal trying to get out, the more stress it puts on them. There truly is a medical reason for it and to put it simply that is the reason why. And by stress to the baby I mean physical and physiological e.g. pulmonary, skeletal, etc.
  • Soo in that case when you actually go into labor stay at home until you are ready to push...another option is find another midwife that supports your decision...

  • Your welcome i just like to hear the right info bc the wrong info causes panic !
  • I was given pitocen with my daughter and it was horrible... at 34 weeks I started leaking amniotic fluid because of an infection. I wasn't dilated, I don't even think she had dropped yet (but I might be wrong) they had to get her out though so my options were to use pitocen or have a section...well I wasn't going to have a section because I refuse to get an epidorel or be put under. Anyway the pitocen knocked me out...it induced labor alright, but it also And me sleep in between contractions, I was groggy, I vomittied everytime I had a contraction, then when my daughter was born I was so out of it I don't really remember it, I lost so much blood that they had an or room preped for me, I couldn't see my daughter for over 12 hours because I was so groggy and couldn't even sit up without fainting.... I know not every situation is the same but I will never ever take pitocen again! I only took because it was an emergency but if that were to happen again I would be looking into alt routes to be induced for sure!

  • Everyone has the right to come up with their own birthing plan. My degrees are in health sciences so this is what I've learned and are my clinical experiences. My cousin has homebirths and I'm all for them, although in cases where medical intervention is needed then I'm all for it. In cases in which a mother cannot contract and segment her precious baby thru the birth canal which causes more physiological and physical stress on the baby then yes pitocin is needed. To rush delivery for the sake of time is not needed. If ur Dr does not express legitimate reasoning for using it on u on ur case then ur right is to refuse it and if u have personally experienced where pitocin is used as malpractice then repremend them. Everyone has a birth plan that suits them best so best wishes to you all and healthy babies to come :)
  • Unfortunately finding another office isnt really an option for me. the insurance i have is very close to medicaid and the only other office that accepts my insurance is even worse than the one i go to now and i would also have to deliver like an hour away.
@HomeBirthAdvocate I do plan on staying home as long as possible during labor, im trying to go without an epidural also and i've heard its easier at home because you can move more freely opposed to being stuck in a hospital bed. thank you so much for your advice though! thank god i still have so much time to get everything worked out, i just hate waiting until the last minute for things lol, especially when it comes having my baby. its something i've actually had nightmares about :/
  • All I know is that you have the RIGHT to refuse any medications or interventions that they want to give you. Just because she says that is their protocal does not make it right, nor does it give them a valid reason to use it.
  • That really sounds like a rude midwife. If youre not in a position to change, Id definitely set up a birth plan. Id put on there that you dont want pitocin or ANY labor inducing drug, especially cytotec or anything else. (synthetic oxytocin is not the only thing used.) Youre gonna want to give a copy to the midwife, but make sure you keep several copies for yourself that you can give to your attending nurse or anyone else you feel has any say over your labor.
  • Wow for a midwife to use pitocin seems out of character...every midwife I have ever met take the natural route for labor an delivery. I am actually baffled at her even suggesting it if it is not necessary.
  • Thanks for the tips ladies..I agree I heard that that medication was more for the drs convince rather then mother's...only if its medically necessary this is my first...but wat if they're telling u that its necessary but they just want to speed up ur labor?? How do u kno the difference @homebirthadvocate or anyone I don't want meds either my biggest concern is just not knowing and a Dr without my best interest if I don't get my own Dr..
  • I've watched a lot of documentarys and read a lot Idk what to believe really..most documentrys I saw put the Dr down...but are they really tryna just get u in and get u out????
  • I am being induced Monday with pitocin because of health problems throughout my pregnancy. If i hadn't had so many problems i wouldn't be doing pitocin. My midwife also told me that if i opt out of the epidural i can walk around freely at the hospital.

  • You have the right to refuse pitocin. Also, I am very surprised that your midwife said that to you. They are usually big proponents of natural births which is why many people choose to use one. Make a birth plan, research the benefits and risks of pitocin on reliable websites, and make an informed decision about when and if you would ever want to have pitocin given to you. Good luck to you...wishing you a beautiful birth.
  • @new2_this the midwife I saw yesterday told me the reason they typically give pitocin is because they dont want you sitting around in the hospital taking up room. If your not laboring to their "standards" they'll start pitocin.
  • I agree most midwives tend to go the natural way. Only reason I was induced with my son was I was two weeks over due and they would let him stay in any longer.. for which I was actually grateful. Although I'm pretty sure she could have just broke my water since I got contractions right after that. Pitocin sucks. I prefered my all natural labor the best :)
  • Wow. @mszcastillo they shluldnt admit you to begin with if your not far into labor and actually I'm in shock at that.... I'm going to have to see what my midwifes say when I go in thursday
  • I feel so lucky yo have the doctor I have... she is a huge advocate on natural births, breastfeeding, only does vaginal deliveries, already told me she is not planning on inducing unless me or the baby are in distress...answered every question I have and asks me over and over if I have questions or concerns. She is amazing! Such a huge change from the doctor I had with my first baby!
  • Yea @mszcastillo that's all I ever heard from people..my Aunties and sister suggested I stay at home until my contractions are coming sooner..I don't live far from a hospital..but they said if u there to long that's when drs start to get anxious...I can just go by wat I hear or read until I have my own experience under my belt...but I don't wanna be rushed..like the drs have better things to do I mean I am part or ur routine also Just BC labor may take sum time...
