What do you moms and dads feel about chocolate milk....

edited May 2011 in Parenting
i saw an article the other day about schools considering banning chocolate milk from the lunch menu. I personally feel that chocolate milk isnt that big of a deal as long as its not the only thing kids are drinking and its not a everyday thing. i let my bfs 3 year old son have it once a day once a weekend that we get him and i almost always make sure its at noon so we have time to go out and burn off the energy and sugar. Was just curious as to how u other parents feel about chocolate milk or strawberry milk for that matter...

  • My kids love it... But its considered a treat n I do half chocolate milk half white... N I only buy wen its on sale but my oldest gets chocolate milk for lunch at school but he is not a picky eater and eats very well otherwise n is very active so I dnt have a problem wit a carton of chocolate milk a day...
  • My daughter gets one sweet beverage a day, weather its chocolate milk, strawberry milk, juice, or tea...she almost always picks the milk which is fine since its rich in calcium and vitamin d

  • Moderation is the key.
  • @praying4our3rd what if the child will still drink healthy and really knows that chocolate milk is a treat. danny will only get chocolate milk if its offered to him. he doesnt ask for it he generally asks for water milk or juice.
  • I don't like milk a whole lot and throughout my pregnancy the taste tends to make.me sick. So I put a little bit chocolate mix in it so I can drink it. When I was in school I always drank the chocolate milk...and personally I think its better than nothing. I think first if they're going to ban the chocolate milk they should ban the cookies and all the other crap because chocolate milk is probably more nutritional. I don't think it should be that big of an issue...as long as your child doesn't live on it and is healthy otherwise like @kfigueroa said.
  • My son loves MILK and CHOCOLATE MILK..
    he eats pretty healthy..
but I mean if you kid doesn't eat healthy .then no get rid of it..but there most likely drinking ...
  • I let my son have chocolate milk when ever he wants he does not ask for it all the time so I dont mind. I just buy the powdered nesquik that has %40 less sugar than most other brands and I only use one small spoonful. He also drinks regular milk also so I dont think its really that bad.
  • @SurpriseBaby i personally think they also need to take a harder look at the physical education classes they offer. when i was growing up we had phys ed 3-5 times a day depending on which school. middle school it was twice a week and that was it in highschool we only had it one semester for half hour a day. so really i think they should offer a better phys ed along with better food....
  • I drink a glass of chocolate milk just about every morning...i also drink white milk at least once a day too. When i was growing up my dad always bought the store brand syrup YUCK..until we bitched that we only wanted herseys syrup it the best!
  • @praying4our3rd ok was just curious usually dont have it in the house but since getting pregnant i crave it constantly so its in here alot more often and i cant justify sitting there and having a glass and not letting him have a small one with me
  • My kids also consider apples n oranges n carrots sticks a treat... And they love their water n plain milk too but they are all extremely active, we dnt own any video systems, my oldest plays sports, rides his bike to school n is just plain hyperactive( well he is adhd lol) n my middle son is in headstart n takes a norm of 4 small helping of both meals at school and an after school snack plus full supper but is also constantly moving, climbing, jumping, ughh he drives me crazy sometimes lol n my daughter well she drinks water all day long nonstop I swear, most ppl can't believe how much she drinks but I'm the same way especially with water... They are all in their targeted weights for age and height... I dnt know if its done the same in publics schools but my son goes to a parochial school and they send milk slips home quarterly so I choose what kind he gets... Maybe that's a better option than banning, ppl seem to make a big deal when they feel they don't have a choice
  • @Rissalee7 I agree. In elementary we had phys. ed. 3 times a week plus recess. In Jr. High we only had it every other day for half the year and in High School we had the option to do packets and essays instead of phys. ed. So maybe they should incorporate physical activity into an every day thing at school? For like 30 minutes...? I don't see the issue. I also was only required to take 2 health classes the entire time I was in school....maybe they should up that from the beginning.
  • Im 31 and when I was in elementry school they only offered chocolate milk on Fridays. It was a treat. I think they should go back to that. I could have chocolate milk at home but my mom made it witn olvaltine and she didnt add much.

I hate milk and the only way for me to get it down is to put a half of spoonful of syrup in it. It barely tints the milk but its enough for me to drink it without gagging. I also put in 10 hour shifts at work up to 5 days a week so I know a half of spoon of sugary liquid is not going to hurt me. I will do white milk with my son and maybe as a treat once and a while he can have a (very) little spoonful of syrup
  • @SurpriseBaby def agree with you i think i had one health class in hs and that was it, but we had like 6 diff food classes offered to us...one of which was based on world quisine and unless u didnt kno french cuisine is very much on teh sweets side so lots of eclairs and such
  • So I'm fat and I know it but we give my daughter chocolate milk up to 3 times a day. It's one of the only dairy things or fattening things she will eat. I do switch it up and do soy milk with ovaltine so it has more vitamins. But she is skinny and tall so I'm not worried about it. And the chocolate milk has fat and calcium that she otherwise wouldn't get. Plus the chocolate milk she drinks is organic so I feel good that we aren't pumping a bunch of artificial hormones into her system
  • I just have to see that the u.s. is one of of leading countries in milk consumption. I believe that its really not even a necessity as long as one eats enough of a variety that they cover nutrients and vitamins that we need. A lot of places don't drink milk what so ever , maybe just put in cereal. My daughter was lactose intolerant as an infant and was told that even though she can drink it now, will likely be so later in life too. My ex was the same. So really should we ban white milk in schools too? Or only offer skim? And offer other foods that have same vitamins n nutrients. I think the biggest influence on how our children eat is us.
  • My kids only have chocolate milk maybe once a week & only 1/4 of a cup
  • My kids drink ovaltine... It has less sugar than the syrup and has a few vitamins.. Its the only way i'll drink milk too.
  • i also should point out that until getting pregnant i didnt drink anything othre than whole milk or if at my bfs parents from the cow milk. now being pregnant i can only tolerate 1% or skim milk.
  • i love chocolate milk. some kids simply cannot stand the taste of regular milk and chocolate milk is about the only way to get them to get the calcium they need. besides, every kid needs a little treat while at school. school is hard work and i think chocolate milk at lunch is a reasonable treat.
  • I love chocolate milk! My son does too...we both have a glass in the morning with our breakfast...that's basically the only time he gets it tho unless its a special occasion
  • Choc milk is same as milk. Just better tasting. I think that's absurd. When I was little that was the only milk I had unless it is with cereal. People just have to teach their kids better eAting/exercise habits and stop being lazy
  • When my daughter was about 3 she was sent to a nutritionist because her doctor thought she was too small. My daughter has the perfect or ideal height/weight combination. The nutritionist said that because she wouldn't drink white milk because I breasted exclusively for a year that chocolate milk was absolutely fine, as is everything, in moderation.
  • mmy middle school we had physical ed fo 1 1/2 hours every day, run laps, push UPS, crunches, and we had to do sprinting, 1/4 mile run, pull UPS EVERY YEAR. that's how it should b, if u weren't prepared with gym clothes you received a zero and had to write the gym rules 5 times. everyone learned that the hard way. in hs we missed one quarter for health class, otherwise we had an hour for physical ed. we had three groups team, which was serious football playing, jocks. activity, which was more leisure, regular people tennis, volleyball, softball. then there was weight room.
  • PPHYSICAL EDUCATION IS CRUCIAL
  • Yes, I'm also upset about them taking away whole milk to either 1% or lowfat. It's cause of obesity in children, but what about the skinny kids, like my son. He's not under weight but I would like him to be a little bigger. So I do not think its fair. My son is not a big milk drinker, but he only drinks chocolate milk at school and I have to force him with whole milk at home.
  • i dont like the way plain milk taste if i have to ill drink it plain but i either make it into chocolate milk or i add sugar or splenda to it
  • My daughter drinks chocolate milk 2 times a day.. I don't think its a big deal as long as ur not putting a bunch of syrup in it.. me I can't drink regular white milk *yuck* it upsets my stomach and the only way I can drink milk is if I make hot cocoa with milk & not water.... btw my daughter loves water and she is very much healthy
