I thought my water broke! (Some TMI involved)

Okay ladies, so my boyfriend & I had very gentle sexual intercourse, & I fell back asleep for an hour. I woke up to pee, walked into the bathroom, & clear fluid began to gush out of me. I still had a full bladder feeling, & about 30 seconds after the initial gush, I peed like normal and dried myself off before rushing to the hospital. This fluid was not thick, viscous, or mucus-y, it ran down my legs like water, was totally clear, & had no smell. Several hours later, I'm home from the hospital. They tested the fluid, & it came back negative as amniotic. They gave my baby a non-stress test & she was great. A pelvic exam showed I'm completely closed - no cervical dilation. I'm 33w & 5 days pregnant.

I asked what the fluid could have been, & the best guess was that I peed myself. But how could I do that without knowing, & then sit down & fully urinate less than a minute after this fluid appears? Plus, I could feel it coming from my vagina, the way a gush of period blood feels when you stand up suddenly. I don't get it. And I was wondering if any of you ladies have experienced this during pregnancy or heard of it happening?

    I did about a month ago, I was not even 20 weeks yet. I thought I started my cycle and ran to the bathroom. I was sitting on the toilet, no sign of blood. There was clear fluid just coming out. I work for a doctor and he had one of the females docs we work with do a pelvic. It was fine, he said it just had to be vaginal secretions. I have been fine since, no other problems. Hope this helps.

    I would agree and as semen.. I've had this happen to me before.. its clear &mucus like after it stays in there for awhile(tmi) &its like after you pee its still there.. I would def say semen.. sounds that way

    wow.. that's scary.. but I agree with the semen theory lol.. maybe it was some pee also?! idk.

    It was really scary! Now, I have fallen asleep after sex in the past, gotten up to pee, and had leakage of "fluids," but never like this. It was copious, to say the least, and very, very liquid-y. Not mucus-y at all. It looked exactly like water, and it was enough to rush out of me and onto the bathroom floor, and then continue to run down my legs after the initial gush. I didn't finally pee until after the fluid had slowed down (took about 30 to maybe 45 seconds altogether), and I realized I needed to be checked out right away. As I was drying my legs off, I checked the consistency of it and checked for smell. I have heard amniotic fluid has a smell, but this had no scent that I could detect.

    @aaltamirano925: Perhaps what happened to you was what just happened to me earlier today? It sounds exactly the same. Whatever it was, the doctors said I did the right thing by rushing to the hospital to get checked. I have to have faith that when they say it wasn't amniotic fluid, they are correct, but it was very scary thinking my baby was coming today at just 33 weeks. I want her to stay in there as LONG as possible!

    Don't forget that you are producing more down there too. So my guess would ne a combo of your fluids and his!

    I've had that happen like a weird liquid & it wasn't semen I was foundering the same thing idk what it is but your not alone

    @keeleab: If you don't mind me asking, how far along were you when this happened to you? Was it after intercourse, or just random? I'll be seeing my OB on the 24th, & if I learn anything from my doc, I'll post it on this discussion & tag you! :D

    At least we know we aren't alone in the weirdness! ;)

    I had that happened with my 2nd bby...er doc said o its pee...well my doc said it was a fluid n rushed me in to be induced thx god I called her n didn't wait or baby would of be dead..call u doc asap

    That happened to me Friday night they tested and it was neg but I swear on my life it wasn't couldn't have been pee. Started contractions and with in 3 hours gave birth to my son .....

    I had this happen to me 2 weeks ago!!! I had to pee, emptied my bladder and then a lot of clear fluid came gushing out! I went to l&d and it wasnt amniotic fluid.. I just dont see how it could of been anything else....after I just emptied my bladder! So scary!

    @ashleyfew: Thanks for the tip, hun! I may check those out. I'm so glad I get another ultrasound on the 24th. I can't wait to see her again & be sure she's okay in there! :)

    @EricaK22: How far along were you when this happened? I felt the exact same way about it that you do, & it's really scary. It helps to know other women have experienced this strange phenomenon, but I just wish I had an absolutely clear, straight-forward explanation for what the fluid was. If I learn anything useful after talking to my OB on Tuesday, I'll tag you & post it up here! :D

    @artistmamma I was 31 weeks! I wish the nurse would of given me a better answer than "probably just discharge or bladder leakage" really?! Theres NO WAY it was discharge..i kept going back to the bathroom because I would feel pressure, and it would just continue to come out..i went like 6 times in less than 30 mins! It just doesnt make any sense.

    @EricaK22: I'm 33, almost 34 weeks and this just happened to me yesterday. And I got the same answer as you...I hate how vague that is & how it leaves you wondering, worried. I was examined in L&D, & it just so happened that my OB was the on-call doc that day, so he ordered the tests. I'm left just having to trust that they know what they're doing, but it still makes me anxious. How far along are you now, or did you have your baby?

    Haha.... i had a similar incident today in tj maxx.... the cashier asked me when i was due and 30 seconds later while paying i felt something run down my leg. I was startled... she saw, flipped out and before long everyone though my water broke. Nope. I peed. Horrifying and so embarassing.

    I had a similar experience 2 weekends ago. I had just got to the movies an decided to pee before the movie. I peed then washed and felt like I just started my period or something. I ran to the toilet an it was clear fluid with no smell. It was really weird I had 2 more gushes during the movie same thing. Crazy! Kinda scared me but baby was still moving an I didnt talk to my doctor about it cuz I am to shy in person. Im 26w btw.

    @maggie: Oh you poor thing!! Could you tell you were peeing, or did it just happen so uncontrollably that there was no stopping it? I peed myself twice so far, both times at home, thank goodness!! Once when throwing up (my morning sickness never stopped), & once when I sneezed real hard. Pregnancy is teaching me a lot about having no shame. I was never really shy before, but now I pretty much have no boundaries or fears. Lol!

    @mrswright: Please, please, please don't be afraid to tell your doctors anything, no matter how embarrassing it feels at the time. They've heard everything under the sun & are paid to listen to us. Definitely tell your doctor, sweetie. They need to know this stuff so they can help us. Trust me, the farther along you go in your pregnancy, the more you learn to just drop those fears & be open. Think about your baby first & making sure he/she is alright, because that's the most important thing. OB docs have to get terribly personal with us, from their hands-on exams, to needing to ask about our sex lives, bowel movements, looking at our pee, & eventually delivering our babies. I feel totally cool with telling my doc anything...you've gotta get over your shyness & do the same, hun. For your baby's sake!! :D

    @artistmamma im almost 34 weeks myself on monday. When are you due? Im due 7/4. I was examined as well, but I wish I would of gotten a better answer. It makes me worry because this is my first, what if I go and my water does break and they tell me its discharge or bladder leakage? Kinda makes me not trust the l&d nurses.

    When I was there some woman came in and she was crowning! They treated her like it wasnt an emergency...really had me shocked!!!

    @EricaK22: Oh man, I feel the EXACT same way as you do, sweetie. This is my third pregnancy, but I lost my first two to first trimester miscarriages. I've never made it past week 8 before now, & this is all new to me. I'm due July 2nd (we are REALLY close in our due dates :D), but I have the strongest feeling she's coming sooner. I just want her to stay in there until at least 37 weeks. I've had so many health issues & complications, I was told I would never be a mom, & this baby truly is a miracle. I just want her to be healthy...

    Im 33 weeks it happen just recently, its happened a few times but its normal I guess it obviously wasn't my water breaking I thought it was at first lol

    This happened to me when I was like 20 weeks I'm about 22+5 and I went to the docs about it last week cuz I felt like my body was spreading like my pelvic bones anyway that apperently is a hormone called relaxin and the clear liquid gush was my mucus plug it was clear like yours and it had no mucus that I remember but she said sometimes it just happens really early and it will reproduce itself so not to worry u will be fine it is so weird though and scarry huh

    That happened to me Sunday! I was having contractions though I was in church and began to have light contractions about every 3 min I felt something come out of my vagina and went rushing to the bathroom when I got there my panties were soaked I peed after wards the hospital told me the same thing that I peed myself but I know it came out of my vagina I'm 1cm and almost 31 weeks I felt so stupid
