pregnancy and kidney stents...help!

So when I was 22 weeks pregnant i had a uteric kidney stent put in my right side due to a kidney infection. Iv been having pain on and off in my right side ever since but no more infections. Im now 32wks+1day and since yesterday have been having pain in the lower part of my tummy and in my lower back quite badly my bd said its probs just the kidney stent again, but im not so sure as ita not the same kind of pain. Has anyone else had a kidney stent or have any ideas as to whts happning? X

  • @ashleyfew But im only 32 weeks. If I had known I could refuse the stent I would have done its caused more problems then its worth. How high is the risk of going into labour prematurly cos they didn't tell me that either. :-s

i am 18 weeks and also have kidney stones and have had them since i was 6 weeks. I have been lucky enough to not have to go to the hospital but there are times where i think i should. I have past 1 stone while at the doctors but that was weeks ago. But man are they painful. This is my 3 pregnancy. And in my 1st pregnancy i had gall stones and had to get my gall bladder removed at 7 months and at least they could do something about that one but with my my kidney stones my doctor is making me wait till my little girl comes which is almost 20weeks. So i now how you guys feel. Good luck girls!

  • @mommyb3 I feel sooo sorry for you kidney stones and/or infections are soo painful. Do you have any idea as to wether or not a kidney stent might increase the risk of preterm labour cos I'm in pain atm. X
  • @mummy_2_be19 im not sure since my doctor won't do anything till my little girl comes. Which my doctor would do something though cause im tried of the pain! Im in pain all the time and no time to put heat on it till bed time since i have a 5yo boy and 2yo girl. I think that a lot of my pain comes from the fact that i had an ectopic pregnancy back in October and had a tube removed and the stretching from the surgery on my other side on top of my kidney stones! So it hasn't been a fun pregnancy.
  • I had the stent. Went to hospital at 12w2d with severe right kidney pain. It took 3 days to find the 2 stones! One blocked my ureter & blocked urine from releasing. So dr put a stent in said come back in 4 weeks for removal. At 16w4d they took the stent out along with the 2 stones. With both the insertion & removal they did a spinal because some meds are bad for baby. But with the removal the spinal wasn't as stong ( outpatient procedure). So I felt kidney pain but nothing else in the ureter. They removed the stones with a basket. I'm 20 weeks today & feel great!!!
But with the last week I had the stent I had pain fevers & headaches. The stent shouldn't be in there for more than 4-6 weeks while we r pregnant. That's why we feel pain its because of baby growing & putting pressure on the ureters. Also with pregnant ladies we produce more calcium so when dr took the stent out, it was crusted badly with calcium. You shoulve had yours replaced at least. I think that the calcium is building up on the stent causing pain. I had an excellent urologist. & asked many questions. Id call your urologist and tell him your pain & problems.
  • @one5one I will i got an appointment on june 20th, when i had mine put in they said it can only be in for a max of 6 months iv had mine in since march 22nd. Now there telling me i can't have it out till after my babies born. Hes due july 15th
I think the main reason they wont take it out is cos im to heavily pregnant. :-(

I had a stent put in when I was 12 wks b/c of a kidney stone. At first I was told it would stay in for a few wks and then when they did the procedure (w no anesthesia btw!) They put in a diff one that can be there for 6 months. On my last ck up the dr said they want to keep it in til after the bby is born b/c they want to make sure the bby is fine all theroughout pregnancy. He did mention that calcium deposts tend to form on or around the stent and if that's the case they will have to replace it b4 the bby is born. I was fine for a while and all of the sudden then burning pain when I pee came back. Just yesterday I peed a little bit redder urine so I am a bit worried b/c I think by now I should b peeing ok. No matter how much I drink my urine is still really yellow and idk if all the burning and dark urine is due to a uti or what but I hope this doesn't last throught my whole pregnancy. Its so UNCOMFORTABLE. I see my urologist this coming wed so I hope he can anwer a lot of the questions I now have
  • I had stents in both kidneys my last pregnancy at 28 weeks until 8 weeks after my son was born. It was horribly painful everyday. I peed blood everyday and was on antibiotics the rest of my pregnancy to prevent further infection. I think I called my doctor almost everyday and my urologist as well to complain of pain, etc. I was on bedrest after they were put in but I wouldn't have been able to act normally if I wanted to, it was just to painful. I really feel for you and I'm thankful that this pregnancy is better thanks to precautions that we took as soon as we found out I was pregnant again.
  • Oh and about preterm labour. I had to have labour stopped twice during the surgery and then 3 other times before I was 36 weeks. I had my healthy baby boy at 37 weeks.
  • @ashleyfew not all stents need replaced every 4-6 weeks. I had mine for 5 months with no replacements, there are different kinds.
  • I think so. When you're far along its different but 6 months?? If you had it in since march they should've changed it at least once. Because they get heavy calcified. Mine was after only 4 weeks.

  • @ashleyfew thats ok, just clarifying. It depends on what they are made out of, mine was the kind that you can keep for up to 6 months. I had them in for 5 months and they were ok. It's not something i ever want to go thru again lol.
  • @onemoreontheway and @ashleyfew and @one5one Well iv got an appointment with a urologist on the 20th june, but thats only 3 weeks b4 my edd so im not sure if i should leave the stent or ask the urologist to take it out early. wht you guys think????
  • Idk I feel for you, when I had mine I had hoped to get it out while in the hospital post delivery but it want an option. A week after I had ct scans my kidneys were still full of stones and infection so I needed lithotripsy a few times to get the stones broke up.
  • @onemoreontheway ouch that sounds painful! i dont tend to get stones at all i just keep having bad uti's and kidney infections. i think i might try to hold out for another 7 weeks till my baby boys edd. thank you for your help also i think me and you have had the same kind of stent, i hink mines one of those 6month ones. x
  • I currently have stents in myself. Have had them in the same length of time as you and I started having the same exact pain that you are describing to a tee. I also feel like it isn't quiet my kidneys but there is something wrong. I keep peeing blood and all my doctor tells me is that i am not drinking enough water. I have 3 quarter sized kidneys stones in my left side and a couple smaller ones on my right. I have the stent in my left side.

My previous pregnancy I also had the same problem, but never felt like this. I know each time is according to my doctor. The kidney doctor that I had the first time I had to have the stents replaced ever 4-6 weeks because of calcification and it sucked really bad, but i was still able to move around a bit and was never and i repeat never in this much pain, and i was 2 weeks overdue with my son, thankfully the day after i had my son they went in removed the stents and used sonic vibrations to break up and remove my kidney stones. This time the doctor told me that I could have this stent in for up to six months without worrying about anything calcifying but I am not too sure. I also have to wait until a few weeks before the baby is suppose to come out in order to see how things are progressing and I don't know if i can wait that long.

My situation i couldn't refuse the stents because the stones were blocking my proper kidney functions and pushing e coil into my bloodstream. The doctor also told me that if i had waited another day because my infection got so bad so quick that i would have died :(

Talking to my obgyn the rate for preterm labor is while you are actually having the surgery is the greatest with a lesser chance of preterm labor after they are already placed. I was worried about it as well, but i figured that since my last one went ok that this one was going to as well but i have had nothing but problems. My doctor thinks that there is something with my body chemisty that causes me to only have these problems when i am pregnant and he basically told me that after this pregnancy that I should get fixed for lack of a better word in order to ensure me not dying. This saddens me of course but I suppose after three children I should be blessed with what I have.

I am sorry that you are going through this because I know that it sucks, and if i would have know how common it was for other women to have had this same issue I wouldnt have felt alone going through this thinking that there was something wrong with me. I hope you start to feel better but if you dont you should call your doctor to prevent anything bad from possibly happening.

Yeah really not enjoyable having a sten't in that long, but it's better than having
once that needs changed a lot. When I had mine put in it caused preterm labour, I wouldn't want my baby going thru that stress all the time. Good luck to you! :)
  • You might have to wait. But always ask as many questions as you can think of. Try to update about your birth & how the stent issue goes. Goid luck to you & baby!!!!!!

  • @Kalikojenie thank you for your help its comforting for me to know that there are other people who have gone through or are going through the same thing as me. i hope your pregnancy goes well. x
@onemoreontheway i suppose, id rather only have to go through having to have the stent put in and taken out just the once, and your right its best not to put my baby through anymore stress.x
@one5one ill keep you updated i promise and dont worry i plan on asking my urologist alot of questions and i hope hes as much help as you lot have been so thank you. x :-)
@ashleyfew thats what im sceared about because i dont think i can put up with it for much longer i know i only have 7 weeks 3 days left but it seems like sooo much longer when im in this much discomfort. x
  • Glad to hear it. That's the only way I learn is by asking about what I don't know. Good health to you!!!!!
