family members claiming names and not even pregnant

edited May 2011 in Baby names
Ok, I need some advice.
So, you know the drill of questions everyone asks you when you're pregnant...when are you due, how far along are you, gender, names? Well, we've always kept hush on the top 2-3 names and just throw out a huge list and mix the top ones in there.
Well, my SIL, who's not in a relationship always says, "Oh, I love that name, that's my top name, you can't use it" and the name she's talking about is always our #1 pick. We already "stole" my daughters name from her...lol...its crazy, and she really gets mad about it (shes 30 BTW). Then there's my husbands cousin (she's 28), who says "oh, just don't use these names b/c I'm claiming then now." Really?? She's in a relationship, but nothing serious. Neither of them are planning on having kids soon, so why say something to me?!

Ugh, now I'm keeping my mouth shut, but still want to use the names we like and THEY have claimed...what to do?????

  • Use the names hun!! :) if they start anything, tell them how you feel. Say hey, these were on MY paper and clearly I am the pregnant one who is having a child right now, NOT you, so you can't "claim" the names I picked!
  • This happened to me. I was pregnant with my second, my brother in law's gf got really and I mean REALLY angry when I wanted to name my son Jaxson. She said if her and my brother in law have a son one day she wanted to name him Jack after her father. Mind you she was 18 years old at the time, and they had been together for a year. Needless to say they have been split up for years now, and I have my Jaxson lol. Don't understand how people can claim a name to a child that isn't even close to being in the picture! That's like saying don't eat the third pie slice to the left, I might get hungry later, and I might want that exact piece!!!!

  • Thank you for the support! I just hate that they say this stuff to me. It's so annoying!
  • My sister did the same thing. Guess what she was able to come up with another name when her time came. The only time I would say name stealing is if its something unusual and their the ones that told you. Otherwise any halfway familiar name is fair game.
