child birthing classes, yes or no?

edited May 2011 in Pregnant
So my husband is a fireman and works night shift every other week... its getting to that time where we should be signing up for our birthing class... but with his schedule i would have to attend classes alone. So my question is : Is it worth it or not? Do we really need to take this class? This is our first pregnancy also.

  • If its your first I would say go. If anything you at least walk away with a better understanding of what to expect.
Maybe he can go to every other one if he has every other weekend off?
  • I never went. You can find stuff to read together on the internet and in bookstores. It's your call though. Oh and you can always set up a private class for one day.
  • Idk if its worth it cuz this is my first too but I signed up for them but my babys dad isn't around at all so my mother will be going with me cuz she will also be my main person when I give birth... here in Colorado they offered a 6 week class where u go once a week or they offered a 1 day 8 hr class so try looking into that good luck! N sorry I can't be much help

  • Wow sorry am on my phone idk y it posted that many times
  • @praying4our3rd i have read so many books i could probably deliver at home alone! Not going to try though! But will we learn more than just what we have read? Hb is also a paramedic so he know how to keep the kid in if need be! Otherwise he says all we need is crisco oven mits and a spatula and he can do the delivery lol
  • Childbirthing classes helped me and dh alot, we went with our first and they were very informative, interesting and super fun. We ate lol, played games and got to know one another, and after all babies were born we, we had a reunion a year later to share our stories. I think it helped hubby cope in the delivery room as well. And now 14 years, and 4 babies later we still have memory of what we were taught as well as friends who we met in class. (I think once is more than enough though)
  • Wow ours were 6 weeks, an hr and a hlaf every thursday, and some days we'd hang out longer @praying4our3rd
  • I'm having my first child so I took a birthing class. I went to a one day class for likr 5hrs. I really didn't find it to useful.. most everything they said I had already learned from my books.

  • Call you hospital, they may have a one day class that you can sign up for. My hubby and I did the one day class because I wouldn't have gotten him to go every week for 6+weeks. I thought they would help, but when the time came for labor and delivery everything I thought I learned went out the window. I would at least go tour your hospital, that is one thing we did at our class. The best class I took was my breastfeeding class.
