Apparently I could die I need advice.

edited May 2011 in Health
So I went to the ER yesterday because I was really sick and I couldn't catch my breath. They gave me antibiotics for the sickness I have. So that should be fine in a few days.
But my heart rate is really high, bouncing from 120-145. /: they were trying to give me a catscan cause I might have a blood clot near my lungs but I didn't want to because it exposes the baby to radiation. I decided to go home and try to relax and see if it'd go down, it hasn't its at 125 right now.
Now I'm 32 weeks so he might not get the risks of being deformed from doing the catscan, but I'm scared to do it still. It doesn't seem fair to him. /:
Does anyone have any idea if this is a good idea to just go back and have it done? Cause if a blood clot is causing it its life threatning.

  • Are you still short of breath? Did you go to the regular ER or the OB dept?
  • Your baby needs a healthy momma! Blood clots are very serious. If the doctor believes the risk of the scan is necessary, I would take the chance hun. Ask to be double aproned across your belly during the scan. I hope everything is ok!! Keep us updated :)
  • You should get it done. They will sheild the baby with the lead appron that the techs wear. If it is a blood clot it is very dangerous and baby needs mommy. Good Luck hope you get better soon.
  • @headersure The regular ER, I'm not short of breath cause I've been relaxing on the couch.
I have an at home thing that takes my blood pressure and shows my heart rate. Blood pressures totally fine, but the heart rates so high.
I'm wondering if its from me being sick I either have pneumonia or bronchitis. The doctor said it could be, but she's not sure and she really wanted me to get the catscan. But even at 32 weeks where the chances pretty good he'll be fine I just don't trust it.

This just sucks cause I'm so young it totally doesn't seem normal to have a blood clot. My family doesn't have a history of them, my dad only had one once cause he overdosed and was on bedrest at the hospital for a long time so he wasn't moving around at all.
  • @mindy061606 even if they double sheilded it they mentioned injecting me with something before the catscan and if he or me are allergic to it its bad.
  • I had the same problem at 11 weeks. After consulting some of the top neonatologists, OB's, and radiologists in NYC, they concluded a cat scan would be the worst for the baby. I got a V Q Scan done...it showed no clot. I've been assured that baby should be fine. Ask aboyt a V Q Scan.
  • If ur 32 weeks if shouldn't affect him but he needs his mommy around and u can die I would take are of it so u and ur baby can hv each other for a long time it wouldn't be fair for him of u cut ur life short for not doing the test good luck sweetie

Oh thank god you suggested that ill definetely ask about it when I go back in a few hours.

  • Get the scan. If u die the baby dies possibly. If you feel comfortable call your ob or the Dr on call and talk to them. My heart beat when I was prego went over a 100 for a tiny bit and went back down.
  • As everyone else has suggested, you really need to do what's best for you right now...which is rule out a pulmonary embolisim. Considering that your heart rate is still high, it is an indication that something is going on. You should be seen again as soon as possible. To be honest, I would call your OB's office at let the doc in call know how you are feeling and ask about the V Q Scan. Make sure the hospital you go to has one. I also had a low dose-double shielded chest xray to rule out pneumonia, broken rib, and collapsed lung. I was so nervous about all the radiation, especially when the baby was so young, but so thankful I did it so that I could be here for the baby. Please keep us posted.

  • I would call your OB. They will tell you what they want you to do. The ER docs are usually residents, so they have not done an OB rotation, and they don't really know what is safe for the baby. Before going and having it done, call your OB, if they are closed, page the on call OB. They will know what to do. Also your heartrate is usually high during pregnancy due to the massive amount of blood coursing through your veins.

  • Well if you die so does baby. Babies pretty formed right now so ur thoughts are right. If I were you id let them do the scan. Good luck dear.
  • I had the same thing at 25 weeks and found i had a blood clot on my lung! I didnt have a ct scan instead i had dopplers done on my chest and legs after a course of injections over 5days which broke the blood clot up! Apparently after the course of injections the blot clot had broken up and i felt so much better! The injections are usually given in ur belly but while pregnant they gave me them in my bum or leg!
the dopplers they did were in my legs too because i stayed in hospital for 5days on bed rest and apparently if u have a clot on your lung its common to get them on your legs too!
I was told at the hospital that blood clots are actually quite common in pregnancy so.anyone who has any worries with breathin or pains in their chest should always get checked! Better to be safe than sorry!
