Maternity Photos

edited June 2011 in Just for Fun
So I have been looking online at photographers in my area to take maternity photos of me, when the time comes....
I finally found one that I loved! I emailed her about setting up an appointment or a shoot sometime like sept/oct I figure I will be huge by then.
Anywho I just got an email back that a phoot shoot with her is 1,250 and doesn't include any pictures just a disk and then I have to go pay to print the ones that I want....
Is it just me or this INSANE! I don't want average studio pictures I wanted to take some like in an outdoor setting or something so I was not expecting to pay 39.99 or anything but 1,250?? That's just crazy...

How much did everyone else pay? please tell me this isn't the norm.

  • I have the same question so....bump....:-)
  • You would have to look for an amateur if you want it at a lower price, definitely not $40, even Walmart photos are more expensive then that. Photographers are expensive.
  • That does seem a little high. But what you have to keep in mind is that she is giving you a CD with all the pics. Usually that means that you now own all the rights to those pics. Photogs will charge per pic for the rights. Thats probably why the price is so high. Why dont you ask her how much her sitting fee is and how much individual pics would be. I am sure you wouldnt want to purchase the rights for all those pics...

My brother is a professional photographer so I get mine for free. :)

    But that sounds ridiculous.
  • I think that's a normal price for a good photographer that edits their photos and stuff. They put a lit of time into making sure every picture is stunning. Have you ever had professional pics taken before? If so, have you thought about modeling? There's a website called modelmayham.com for beginning models. That can be a big help. I do plus size modeling and haven't ever had to pay for family photos or anything, you can just work a deal out with the photographer. Good luck!
  • I know that I am friends with a few professional photogs here in Vegas and they charge $250 -$300 for a sitting fee and then allow you to pic what pics you want..or if you want to purchase the rights to all the pics.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • you know you can get that stuff done for free right?? Modelmayhem.com dude... im tellin ya, you can get paid like 100$ an hour do so shoots. Or just make a trade with some for your modelness, their prints. pregnancy pics are very high in demand.
  • @maranda3 they put a lot of work into editing those photos. And they need to be paid for that time...professional photography isnt a joke, its a lot of time.
  • @ashley_smashley I didn't even think about that I was just thinking how much the prints were gonna cost me on top of the shoot.
*Note to self make friends with fancy photographers ASAP!
  • dont have to pay for it just have to sign up and i think photo id is required? but i dont remember, ive been on there for over a year so i dont remember the process, but it takes like 3 days to get completely signed up and approved and what not, but its free, and hell yeah dude. I started pretty much my hobby/ part time carreer there.
  • AND most photographers, if they are not lames, will actually edit your pics and give you a disk, some will even print them for you!
  • lol ya most people dont realize that you ahve to pay to own the rights...and that is what costs a pretty penny. I would just ask her how much for the sitting fee and then how much each pic costs individually..she may have incorrectly assumed that you were interested in all of the pics.
  • I would definitely suggest hunting for an amateur---maybe check at a college in your area; there are usually tons of students who are majoring in photography who are willing to take side jobs outside of school...they need the money and you want the pictures. My fiance' and I looked into a local college for someone to take "Summer/Baby 2011" pictures of us, to add to our wedding album, and the pictures that we got were awesome; we paid $275 for 50+pictures, 4 poses. Her sitting fee was $75 and we got a disc (a total of 21 pictures) and a few print-outs of each pose. The girl did an absolutely awesome job and the price really wasn't bad(:
I wouldn't suggest looking into a professional, unless you're looking to pay a really large price. The sitting fee for the professional that I looked into was $300 and the pictures were $25 apiece. Although I would love some of her pictures, I wasn't looking to pay quite so much.

You can also look into modeling agencies in your area. They seem to always be looking for new pictures to put on their websites and in their galleries, to show their work. You may be able to work out a deal of some kind to get a few free photos for allowing them to photograph and use your body to showcase poses and special photo features.
    Good Luck!
  • @Ashley_smashley I'm aware they put a lot of time into it, did you not even read my post? I'm a professional model, who also deserves to be paid. Photographers use ME to advance their caterers. Occasionally, instead of paying me for my work we work out a deal where they give me rights to the photos or take family photos for me on exchange for using my time and talent. Trust me, it works out for them too.

@maranda3 I was AGREEING with you...and just again letting the original poster know that there is a lot of work that goes into great pics....geesh...
  • My bad for leaving out the word AGREE before what I tagged you in
  • @Ashley_smashley OK, Just a misunderstanding then. Just wanted to make sure you, or anyone else, didn't think I was pushing her to take advantage of anyone. :)
  • Yep no problem..I see how what I posted first could be misconstrued! I totally get where your coming from!
  • @ashley_smashley it seems the 1250 is the sitting fee, and includes 30 to 45 prints on cd, for an additional price they will edit and retouch up to 15 pics and print 5x7's only
  • @maranda3 and @sunshinelove
Maternity pics are personal to me, I don't think I would want anyone re-using the pics I think I would rather pay more to own the rights
  • Fair enough xD
  • In my experience you get what you pay for. I never had maternity pictures done, but for my high school senior pictures my sister and I paid a few hundred dollars for a professional photographer on location at a park. The pictures were so bad I could have cried. I know I could have taken better photographs myself and I was only 17.
  • @TwinMamaToBe if I were you I would definitely shop around! That sounds so rediculously expensive. With my 1st son I got professional belly pictures done and it was no where near that expensive. We didn't do the structured studio type pictures we did the artsy casual interacting type. We used the same lady 4 different times (2x maternity in her studio, once when my son was born where she came and did pictures in our house and then 1 more family session in the park once my son was walking) each time she charged us a $75 sitting fee which included one hour of photography and 1 5x7. Then if we wanted we could choose the photo and print size we wanted that she would print for x amount or get all the shots on a cd to own for $250.
