Baby Has Swollen Kidneys at 19 Weeks - Anyone Had This Happen?

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this.

I went to the OBGYN today for my anatomy ultrasound and she said everything is looking good, but our little boy has slightly swollen kidneys. She said that it is a common condition in boys and that it can go away with time. She made a note to check his kidneys via ultrasound again at 30 weeks and said that today his bladder was full she she doesn't think anything is obstructed.

Have any of you heard of this or gone through this? She told me not to worry, so I'll have to take her word for it, but you never want to hear something is irregular.

She also said my placenta is low laying - but that could move up as the baby got bigger.

I'm just so thankful everything else was A-OK!

    The testes develop near the kindeys then move down. Maybe the swelling is from teste movement?

    @BabyKixALot yes, so far things seem OK, but we'll know more around 30 weeks. I'm just going to listen to my doctor and try not to stress about it. Thank you for the kind words.

    @potato I'm not sure, but that is a good question - I'm just going off of what she told me. She said kidney swelling happens more with boys and actually, if it happens with girls, it is more of a concern. She also said she sees about 20 cases like this a year and if the kidneys do not appear "normal" post-birth, the baby might need non-invasive surgery. So, we'll see what happens. Fingers crossed!

    I have my doc office told me that at around 19 wks they did follow up n sent me to a specialist today I'm 25 wks n had n appointment with specialist n he said baby kidneys look fine now! they told me not to worry also n of course u do but try not to I'm pretty sure he will be fine...

    @Hot2Cold87 that is a relief to hear and I'm happy that your baby is fine as the issue corrected itself. My doctor said it usually does, but they have to make it known so they remember to conduct follow ups. Like you said, you try not to worry, but it's hard to help it!

    If its not correct by birth my doc said he would jus take meds to fix when born n monitoring it now will keep baby from getting kidney infection after birth n doc will know what to do but it can very well fix itself...

    @Hot2Cold87 yes, it seems like it isn't a "major" issue and that it can work itself out. I think my doctor said that 1 out of the many cases she saw required surgery to fix, so the odds are in our favor. I guess we'll wait and see! :)

    Yea I couldn't sleep last night but worryin isn't good so I talked myself down like he would just have to take meds as if he would if he had a cold n u get more sonograms lol that's always good to see them moving around in there...

    @Hot2Cold87 yes, you have to look at the positives! Besides, worrying isn't good for the little one either, so it's better to stay hopeful and happy.

    Yeah... I had a level two ultrasound and the Dr told me the same thing... also that it is common and can fix itself but that I have to go back for another level two ultrasound a month before he's born to see if we will need a surgern there when he is born. It's impossible not to worry. Good luck hun

    @wallieheadbaby3 thank you so much and good luck to you, also! I'm hoping that in both our cases, the kidneys fix themselves so we don't have to worry about needing surgeons - how crazy! It is tough not to worry, but I think we just have to stay positive and be as healthy as possible.

    My sister (now 34 weeks preggo) was told the same thing about her daughter at two different ultrasounds (kidneys were measuring a few mm bigger than normal). The third time they checked, the kidneys were fine. Stay positive!

    I was told the same thing bout my son at my anatomy u/s I then had to see a high risks pregnancy doctor which told me that if it doesn't fix itself which he doesn't think it will then he will need surgery to fix it.
    he told me its called hydronephorisis (sp?)

    but they told me it's common in baby boys n not a major surgery

    I was told that baby's kidney measured a little bigger than normal. The doctor told me that there could be a possibility that her urine would flow backwards. :-?
    But there was a lot of fluids around the baby which meant she'd been urinating. Doc said the problem could and usually fixes itself. I went back about a month later; and the problem had corrected itself. :-)

    I was told the same thing. I just had my follow up level 2 u/s at 29 weeks and the kidneys were fine. The specialist said its very common for boys kidneys to be dialated while they are growing. I'm sure your little man will be fine, don't stress yourself out!

    @Mackenzies_mama2010 yes, my doctor pretty much said the same thing. She said of all the cases she has seen, most rectified themselves and she has only had to perform surgery once. So, I'm staying positive and just thankful all of the other anatomy is looking perfect at this time. I hope your son is OK.

    @JessicaLee I'm trying to just not think about it too much because really, there isn't much I can do and until we know more worrying will only make things worse. It seems like most of the people dealing with this problem have found that the issue corrected itself, so I'm hopeful :) I'm glad that your baby's kidneys are OK!

    My friend had twins n same happened but everythin was fine.
