What happens at first WIC appointment?

edited June 2011 in Pregnant
I have my first appointment tomorrow, I'm 26 weeks, and I want to breast feed. Do they give me the vouchers at the first appointment? and what should I expect. I live in GA.

  • In ky the do the same as mama2be11_4_11 said but they also check your wight and iron. They will give you information about breast feeding classes, here they have a class at different times every week
  • I knew about the proof of income, proof of address, but they didn't tell me to bring proof of pregnancy...I mean they can kinda see I'm pregnant considering my 6 months pregnant belly...lol. Okay, cool I wasn't sure if I had to make another appointment to get the checks.
  • Lol yea I asked the guy that too on the phone what exactly he wanted as proof of preg besides my belly. Just bring an ultrasound pic with u
  • They checked my weight and my iron levels at my first appointment. Also had to take my medicaid card. They will give you at least 3 months of vouchers or at least they do here in TN.
  • yea prrof of pregnancy and need for wic consult with a nutritionist check ur weight and iron and then they try to get u to do a class....I didn't do my first one told them I had bad morning sickness....lol I got WIC at 4 weeks and been to 2 classes now I don't go bac till my Cartier is born
  • @preggointx: what kind of classes? The WIC program here doesn't make you take classes.
  • In Texas u have to take WIC classes for nutrition or breast feeding after ur first u can take it online I took breast feeding classes each time
  • @hurstk28 where in TN are u from? Close to ft campbell or clarksville?
  • I went to mine last week When I was 26 weeks and it was my first appt and j got my vouchers. They just go thru everything with you, they checked my iron levels too.
  • @Jess8D7: i live in Dayton Tn. About 3 hours away from clarksville.
  • They gave me vouchers at my first appointment and i live in Ga too!
  • Well wat if i have no job and i live with my boyfriend at his mothers house at the moment and i don't have medicade I'm under my moms insurance and my mail goes to my moms house should i just put that i stay with my mom and do u think ill qualify
  • Check your weight, prick your finger to check iron levels, and set you up for a breastfeeding class. You get your checks right away.
  • @paige11 u should if u r over 18
  • @preggointx O okay so who u live with doesn't matter
  • @preggointx not to get off subject but if I miss a class or online what will I have to do because I didn't get mine this month and that has to be why
  • @paige11 well in WA, they say of you live with your boyfriend's then they give you food stamps as well as the checks. I'm the same, I'm under my mom's insurance amd my mail goes to that house but that doesn't matter, I dont even think I got asked if I was under anyone's insurance plan. They just asked my income. They never checked my blood tho. But wic is pretty flexible and they never really check anything. they rely on your word . Except when they ask for proof of income and pregnancy. And they dont make me take classes they just offer them. Cuz they are free with wic. And they offer certain things based on what you say to them.
  • @serenityssmommy u have to go up there and talk to someone and get ur benefits back on....they do turn u off the same day u miss a class
