Tattoos

edited February 2011 in Pregnant
I really want to get a tattoo on my left shoulder blade. I read things on the internet that it won't harm the baby but you just have to keep it clean and stuff. Should I get one I really really really want to get one TODAY

  • I think u should ask ur dr first n if he says yeah then go for it ! :) i got a tattoo on my right shoulder blade it didnt hurt but the day after hurt like hell! Lol.
  • I wanted to get another too. But I'd rather be on the safe side so I'm waiting till I pop
  • The problem is the stress on your body, and the risk of infection. Its not about keeping it clean because anything can happen at the tattoo shop to put you at risk. I've known my tattoo artist for about 3 years, but I still wouldn't risk it. If you get an infection while pregnant it will be a big problem. In Massachusetts its actually a law that you cannot tattoo a pregnant woman. I'd have to sign a release stating that there's no way I'm preggers. Just reaallyyy think about it.
  • I know it is tempting but it is best to wait, even if everything the artist uses is 210% steral and you follow the difrections to the book there is still a chance that something may go wrong and it is not safe to risk even the minimalist of chances. Trust me I had the option of getting a bunch of work (for super cheap, a close friend wanted work for his portfolio I would of just had to pay for some of the ink and bake him some cookies) done shortly after I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to so badly.

Why not get a Henna kit and "tattoo" yourself that way, I know it is not the same but it might help curb the urge to get the real thing.
  • I also wanted to say that I didn't mean to come off like I was lecturing, just wanted to give advice based on my experience :D
  • A tattoo artist told me that I can get one but idk I really want one to take my mind off of a lot of stuff.
  • Nobody knows better than ur doctor
  • I actually got a tattoo in early December before I even knew I was pregnant. My dr said as long as it didn't get infected, the baby will be fine. The tattoo needs A LOT of touch ups, but I'm just going to wait until the little monsta is born before I get it fixed, just to be on the safe side.
  • BUT, talk to your doctor!
  • Were are you from? A lot of people won't even tattoo a pregnant women. And I read somewhere that your body needs that energy put towards your growing baby and not towards trying to heel a tattoo. But at the end of the day its really about what your dr. Says and what you feel is right and wrong
  • I wnt one too but I'd rather wait til I hav the baby
  • I would wait cuz sometimes the color will not hold because of vitamins in your system and you don't wanna have a speckled tat for the next few months. Also, some states/cities won't let you, you have sign a disclaimer saying ur not preggers.
  • I have a couple tatts and not crazy scared but there is always that risk of hep. C which wud b very very bad for baby
  • @andrea1stbaby I'm from GA. But this tattoo dude I sled him and he wad like Yeah I can get one but I don't want to harm my baby then again I sometime feel that(I know this sounds crazy) I'm already harming her by smoking I can't stop. Stress will kill you and that's what its doing yo my baby
  • Alot of times, the ink will get rejected. It's just like with some piercings when you're pregnant...some get discharged from your skin and some do just fine.
I would definitely wait till after the baby is born. Spending money just to watch it seap right back out, would suck.
Annnd your body can act very different, healing wise, while you're pregnant. Trust me, I have 43 tattoos.
  • They say not to get tattooed while pregnant cause risk of infection And because your skin is different when u are pregnant ...and would look different than if u got it done after pregnancy ..I would wait!!
  • Lovingmybabygirls11 has the doctor said your babies healthy and everything tho? Some babies come out perfectly fine even if their moms have smoked. Not saying its okay to keep smoking but I understand its hard for you to stop my husband quit awhile ago and he still struggles. I think the best thing you can do is ask your doctor about the tattoo. How far along are you
  • She said everything is fine. I will be 33 weeks Friday. Yeah its real hard to quit. Cause stress gets the vest if ne. I went through a real bad break up it hurt so bad I lost like 15 pounds by drinking water and just smoking cigarettes
