Any tips on Natural Birth Vs. Epidural Use?

edited June 2011 in First time moms
Hi! I'm new to the Pregly forum! :-) I'm a first time Momma & I'm due Sept 18. In a month I'll be seeing my Doc bi-weekly to start prepping for my birt plan. I originally wanted to go with using the epidural, but talking to a few people, I realized I want to try going with an all natural birth. I can't seem to make up my mind. Sigh.

  • I got the epidural and so glad I did!
  • Hmm... I'm considering going with all natural and then if I can't take it anymore, go with the epi resort haha. I know things change all the time anyway even with birth plans. I'm kind of nervous about the aftermath of it all such as "pushing out the placenta"! I've heard it hurts as much as delivering the baby!

  • Thanks for the info, girls!
  • The best advice I can give you as someone who has gotten an epidural twice, planning on another, and sister to two women who have had epidurals after insisting that they wouldn't is to go ahead and see if you can handle all natural. If not, don't feel guilty about speaking up and asking for one! My sister just had her first in January and had an epidural when she began transition. She says that when she has her next one she wants to go all natural because she felt everything once she got to pushing (they turned it back off for her) and even though it hurt she felt like it was something she could handle. But she doesn't feel guilty for getting the epidural! :)
  • I had 2 completely natural births and recommend it. I walked right after giving birth to my recovery room. It's such a natural high afterwards! I didn't even feel the placenta part. For me it def wasn't like pushing out another baby. If you can relax labor isn't that bad. The people you choose to be w you also make a difference. So don't let anyone stressful to you be in the room. Good luck!
  • @Viviya: Thanks! I think I'll def do that. Try natural, but then ask for the epi if I can't handle it. I'm anxious to see how long my labor will take. I really really really hope for it to be quick lol. My cousin got lucky and popped her baby out in 2hrs max! I've had many friends who had had a good 8+ hours of labor :-( I want to make it go quick!
  • @Mommyof4girls: I hope to go through something similar to what you have! I plan to have my BF & Mom there. How in the world did you "relax"?! Lol
  • @RizzyChicky No problem! :) I know with my daughter I was convinced I wanted an epidural but after staying in the hospital overnight with pain meds I decided to try those first. Did NOT work for me, but I left myself open to the option and kept the mentality that it was okay if I felt that I couldn't do it without the epi. I don't blame you for wanting to make it go quick, though - especially if you're doing a great job of handling your contractions, it almost gets downright boring waiting for the chance to push!
  • When you have a contraction your body naturally tenses up, to counteract that response, remember to think something simple in your head like in through my nose out thtough my mouth. I also think of blooming flowers. It helps to think of those things cause essentially your body is working to open to let baby out so by telling yourself you want these things your pain lessens and you start looking forward to the contraction as a means to an end not something to fear.
  • Are there any things I should bring that are natural for calm soothing effects? Lol like lavender candles or what not? I tense up even just for a papsmear :-/
  • I was like you... wanted to go natural but was open for an epidural if I needed it. I didn't want it til the very end, when it was time to push! Pushing felt a lot better so I didn't end up getting it and I'm so glad I went natural! It was extremely rewarding...
