Where do my dogs go on my labor day???

edited June 2011 in First time moms
My BF & I have 2 dogs. I have no idea who will take care of them when I go into labor aaah! I don't have any relatives who can take care of them for a few days either. I'm just assuming a few days because it's what I expect to be out in the hospital. The only solution I can think of is my BF going home once or twice a day to feed & potty them. My #1 priority and what's going on my mind is my birth. I just wanna make sure the dogs are OK while I'm at it! Anyone go through this before?

  • I'm going to be in the same situation. We decided we're going to kennel them. It is worth it to know I don't have to worry!

  • Do you have any neighbors that can watch them?
  • @baby001: Would it be possible to book kennels ahead of time? Due dates are so unpredictable, and I've never left my dogs in kennels before :-/

@Tootie08: I don't have neighbors we are super close to. Especially since we are hoping to move in the next 2mos or so before I'm due. Siigh.
  • Some kennels you can take them the day of without notice hopefully its Not a holiday. You kinda just have to call around and check their rules.it varies for place to place. We decide we rush to the hospital then when he got a chance to leave he'd take them.
  • Depending on their age and if they've ever been boarded before, it can cause them more stress than its worth. Some dogs are great kenneling and others...not so much. If you can afford it, look into them now. Go on a tour, see if they have 'doggie day care' and leave them for a day. Or another option is a lot of people (and dog watching businesses) do home visits.

  • Do you know any of our neighbors or do you have a friend that could come let them out a few times?
  • Agree with a lot of the posters here.. check around for a Kennel, do the prep work for your dogs, find one with good reviews. I guarantee you you'll find a place that will take them with short notice, granted they have room. They still may be able to make a reservation, just explain why they're gonna stay. Think about all the emergencies ppl suffer like a death in the famiky, which requires them to up&leave. They'll understand.
If you're not close with neighbors, anybody trustworthy from your job? Friends of your parents? Parents of your friends?
You could also have your bf and others take turns with stopping at the house, that way it's not such a hassle for any one person.
  • This has been stressing me out too. I've got a 'special needs' bassett hound who had to have both her eyes removed last year due to glaucoma. Taking her to a kennel isn't an option for me, it would scare her too much. I'm literally her eyes and she panics if its not me or my husband around. Poor girl :( best of luck to you!
  • We are pretty lucky, we literally live 3 miles from the hospital. So my hubby an run home and let our dogs out if need be. Also our landlord lives directly behind us so he said he would come and watch them too. I have boarded both of my dogs before. The kennel we found walks the dogs and lets them be outside and stuff, soit is almost like they are at home with us. i would try to find a place that is super pet friendly. Or check with your vet they usually board animals too. Good luck!
  • Thank you everyone for the tips! I'm starting to think maybe having my BF & a friend swictch turns in feeding/letting the dogs out. I'm sure my dogs would be more comfortable at home too.
  • Awww, if I was around id watch them. I love dogs!
