Engorgement

edited June 2011 in Breastfeeding
I just had my baby on Saturday. My breasts r soo engorged. I have tried expressing them in a hot shower but nothing comes out. I manually pumped n only got 1 oz from both breasts combined. I don't know if im doing something wrong. I just want the pain to go away so I can feed him. Is there anything else I can try???? im desperate

  • Can your husband help you out?
  • Help out how?
  • U can try a heat pad but u won't get much right now (well I didn't 2oz per breast) just continue letting the baby nurse it will come down eventually
  • Okay. I know it sounds gross but there was another thread where a woman didn't have her pump and she was engorged and her husband nursed to give her some relief. I've never been pregnant before so I don't know if that's common or not (thinking probably not) and then I was reading on this other pregnancy website that there are women who can do that themselves. Again, I've got no experience but I guess it's better than being in pain. Don't know. :/
  • I had this really bad with my first....the hosptial gav emy girl a bottle and she didn't want anything but that. Urgoing to cry through it but don't give in and give the baby a bottle only allow him/her to nurse from u. That will help a little. Massage them in the hot shower and right after that pump. It will hurt. And after u pump put a hot pad on them and massage again. It will hurt for days to come. If it doesn't go away call dr and he might be able to give u some meds incase it comes from infection. Hang in there. I'm not looking forward to that at all. I know the pain reading this brought flash backs.
  • I've been giving him bottles because he wouldn't latch. It doesn't hurt when I pump so I guess that's a good thing. The left one is flowing more than the right. Thank u for responding
  • Warm compress and express it out In the shower. It seems to work better. Good luck!
  • get some. cabbage leaves n shove them in your bra make sure they cover entire breast or u could get some breast warmers or I just got piece of aluminium foil n put in there or jump in warm to hot shower n squeeze ur nipple till milk starts to flow tgen run fingers down ur breasts squeezing nipple at the end n express a bit off or u could use a breast pump if u have one n store the milk cause those lumps are all the good neutritious milk to make bub plump up all the best
  • I've tried the hot shower twice but nothing comes out. I've been pumping but only getting out an ounce from both breasts combined
  • I actually just had my lactation consultation today atyhe WIC office and these are the suggestions to help with engorgement:
    *Nurse often!
*Cold compresses or cabbage leaves in between feedings to reduce swelling.
*Warm showers or compresses before feedings.
*Soften breasts by expressing some milk.
*Use gentle finger pressure around the base of the nipple to move some of the swelling slightly backward and upward into the breast.
If all else fails an dyour still having trouble contact your WIC office or you can call the hospital to talk and even meet with a lactation consultant who can help you. Don't give up and don't give any bottles as this will not help with your engorgement. Engorgement usually only lasts a couple of days as long as you are nursing frequently. THis is due to your milk coming in and is normal. But giving a baby a bottle already can give them nipple confusion and plus a baby has to work harder at sucking on you than he or she does on a bottle and baby can easily get frustrated trying to nurse while it takes a little bit for the milf to start coming out , as a bottle milk just flows immediately. So baby may get too upset which then in turn gets you upset frustrated and then you'd rather just give the baby a bottle. Just try to be patient and seek some help if you can so you can be successful. It does take work on both ends so try not to stress out too much and relax while feeding or expressing milk. Stress and you being tense can also cause a decrease in milk flow. Hope this helps. This is going to be my 5th baby and I will be nursing him. I have been in your shoes before and its not easy, but you can get through it especially if you have a good support system in place. But definately seek some help at you r local WIC office or through hospital. Hope all goes well and don't beat yourself up, your doing a great job in trying! :)

When I first started breastfeeding, i had no idea how much I was producing until i pumped and seen only a 1/2 oz from each breast - 1 oz total every 2-3 hrs. (that went on for about 2 weeks) Just keep pumping to help the engorgement. Keep baby near u while u pump or smell one of babys blankets to help keep a milk flow while pumping. Massage the lumps in the breast while pumping. Use warm packs on the breasts prior to pumping. I also heard of putting the breasts in basins of warm water for about 10 mins prior to pumping rather than a shower. And use cold compress after pumping to reduce swelling. And make sure u are pumping frequently- atleast every 2 hrs. And empty the breast when u pump (pump until no more comes)

    Good luck.
  • @melinda326 thank u for responding. I have a wic appointment tomorrow. Im really going to try and give this all I've got. His dr doesn't want me to give him breast milk for 2 days because of jaundice so I have to do bottles until he tells me otherwise
  • Massage the hard painful spots as you pump. It hurts like hell but will make it go away.
  • I've been pumping every hr since 9 n i've got 4 ozs. Its not as painful n he's able to latch on. Thank u all for the advice
