pro or no epideral

edited February 2011 in Pregnant
I plan on having one are you all...I'm scared of the pain and that contractions will raise my bp cuz I'm high risk....but on the flip side I know ur baby doesn't come out as alert

  • Epidural all the way and my kids were very alert when they were born.

There is no reason why I should be in pain when there are perfectly good drugs to ease it. lol
  • I would see if you can handle the contractions first. If you can handle that then labor shouldn't be that much harder.

I couldn't, I have a low tolerance for pain and epideral made my experience a lot more enjoyable.
  • My friend tried to wait and by the time she asked for it didn't take I just hope I font have get a c section
  • I have a high pain tolerance (Tattoos? Piercings? Chump change!) and child-bearing hips. I'm going all natural. No inducing, no epidural, only fluids in my IV. My mom said the same thing, @MSC, but I figure that my body is made to give birth, so why not do it the natural way? I'm not anti-epidural, I just don't want one :D
  • Mine isn't .. no hips at all lol
  • I'm also not high risk. Im only 19 and pretty healthy. I try to eat well (I love candy and doughnuts tho ;)) and I walk at least a mile a day.
  • @VictoriaB - you should check your hospitals policy about having an IV. My hospital does not make you have an IV unless you are high risk or want medications. It is a lot easier to do natural pain relief methods without having to try to dance around an IV pole :) or they might let the IV be in but have nothing hooked up to it. Ask the labor department directly or the head nurse of labor and delivery. My doctor told me I had to have an IV as hospital policy which was not true. She was wrong. The head nurse said I did not have to have one.
  • @robot_mommy I think my hospitals policy is that if you don't want pain meds or induction, they'll give you an IV if you need fluids and can't drink or something. I've already read the book they gave me cover to cover :)
  • That's great! I didn't know any of that stuff with my first one and feel like I missed out.
  • @VictoriaB, I have no tolerance for pain. lol
  • I've had all mine natural. The pain isn't unbearable. Woman have been dealing with it for thousands of years. I think there is a time and place for it. But If im healthy im not going to risk slowing my labor. I would sugjest watching The business of being born. The more informed decitions we make the better :)
  • Epidural definatly it made things so much easier last time.so much tht I could realy enjoy labour :-)
  • Contractions and being n labor isnt the same I dont c y people try 2 say that seriously its like u saying when u cramp when ur on ur period ur not going 2 take any pills.
  • This will be my 4th baby. I plan on having an epidural. My first delivery I wanted to go natural. My labor was slowed down because I couldn't relax once I agreed to the epidural things started moving. All of my babies we're alert and had high apgar scores. The only downfall was with #3 I had to have two doses so after she was born I had no feeling in my lower half for at least an hour after
  • Had an epidural with my first and went natural with my second, this time planning yo go natural again, bit bit oppossed to pain meds
  • I like pain so,I don't want a epidural unless I have to get one. I have tatoos pierceings and all so pushing my baby out shouldn't hurt _!!!! But i am very afraid of a c section
  • My first I had no meds like my mom with all 4 or her children. But my 2nd I opt out but I had to have an emergency c-section so I had to have it . My doc office policy is once a c always a c so that a bummer cuz I didn't like the epidural
  • I had my daughter 30min after arriving at the hosp needless to say i was too late for that option.I guess my pain tolerance is high plus I just didn't want to be turned around because of false labor.Havent decided what to do this time..
  • I went natural with my first. I consider myself to have a high tolerance for pain, but i do not want to go through that again. The pain was so intense. It felt like my back was breaking everytime i had a contraction. Epidural this time for sure.
  • I had preeclampsia with my daughter (high blood pressure) and delivered her naturally with no problems. Its painful but nothing you can't deal with. Your body is made to give birth.
  • I think its funny that some of you are comparing your high tolerance to pain w/having tattoos and piercings. I've had 9 tattoos and 9 piercings and given birth. The pain does not compare! My plan was to go natural but after 2 days of contractions and little sleep,I decided to listen to my body and get the epideral. My advice for anyone is to just listen to your body, talk to your doctor about any pros or cons and just think about the end result...having that beautiful baby put in your arms. :-)
  • Pro! Drug me, please?! Lol
  • I didn't have an epidural with my 1st and I managed just fine with gas and air. I think I'm scared of epidurals mainly because thru my work I see many women come to theatre for emergency c-sections or assisted delivery (forceps) because the epidural has slowed down the labour or they can't push efficiently bc they can't feel the contractions. I'm not anti epidural I know some women swear by it but because of what I see at work I don't want 1.
  • I had no med with three of my boys and with baby # four I hope I'll do the same
  • I think I'm going to try without one but sign for one just in case lol its my first baby so we shall see
  • This is #4 and will go with the epidural ASAP!
