Spitting it out!? Please..any advice?

edited June 2011 in Breastfeeding
Well my son is 5 days old and he has been breastfeeding very successfully he's eating often, having the right about of BMs but...ever since last night, all of a sudden, he hasnt wanted to take to the breast easily. I will help him latch on and he will suck a few times, let go and start screaming....I'm completely lost. He was doing so great and now it seems as if he doesnt want it, even if he's making all the signs that he's hungry...It's very frustrating..please give any advice if any of you have had this experience.

  • It maybe something you've eaten(very rare case)
Or you can be amongst the very few whose child actually develops an allergy to the breastmilk. Baby may also be lactose intolerant.
    :-??
Sorry, I've never experienced this (still pregnant, with our first). But, I have read and heard about this.
  • Are you producing enough milk? that happened to me with my first when i barely had any milk and she didnt wanted to even try my breasts any more, if thats the case i have read on here that theres tea, pills and some other things to help you produce more milk
  • @heatherlynn check his mouth to make sure there is no white stuff in it! (Thrush is common but it kinda looks lik a yeast infection) or under his tounge to make sure he didn't tear his fendulum the thing that attaches ur toung to ur mouth sometimes babies are born with it too long and the can tear it easily...lastly did u use anything on ur breasts like lanolin or soap when washing ect...hemay not like the taste....other than that I would cal the pediatrician if it keeps up! I'm soo sorry but don't give up! U could try pumping and givein him a baba so he still gets the breast milk nutients!! Good luck!

  • @mama_kat and @Homebirthadvocate I finally got ahold of the lactation specialist at the hospital i gave birth at. Turns out one of my breasts was engorged. This is my 1st time breast feeding, so i wasnt aware that it could prevent him from wanting to eat on that side. So i was advised to put hot rags on them...not only does it feel good, it seems to help a bit too. Thank you guys for all your advise and help :D

  • the tin/carton will say on it if u cant have it, I think u only cant during pregnanc3.cause of high vitA content I lost my apetite after birth 2 just eat nutritious goof when u can
  • It could also be your milk flow. While you may not be able to manually express a large amount, the babies mouth is shaped for optimal expression. The flow could be too fast for him. I had that problem with my son, but I gave up nursing shortly after as it just wasn't special for me and baby and I was already very stressed as my sister had died a few weeks before he was born and my ex wasn't a big help.
  • You can drink ensures. I drank them w all my pregnancies. Your body will for the most part filter what goes in your breast milk too. Some vitamins don't even transfer to your milk.
