breastfeeding: tips, advice, knowledge. O_o help! lol

edited July 2011 in Breastfeeding
I'm a first time mom and no one I know has ever breastfed. I'm 30 weeks right now but my dr says she more than likely be early. I'm compltely lost when it comes to breastfeeding! Is it easy? I need some advice. Wht are the best brand pumps (elec and manual), how often do u pump, when do u self express, how can u tell when they r latched correctly, what brand bottles work best, does anyone use nipple shields? I just need all the advice I can get. I plan on bf until my daughter is atleast 12 months old and want to know what I'm in for. Maybe you could help @HomeBirthAdvocate ?

  • a proper latch is a wide mouth around your areola and it should not hurt! but for me it hurt for the first 2 days cause i have flat nipples and i had to use nipple shells for a while after and i still wear them between feedings. i still havent ordered my breast pump but im ordering the avent single eletric pump! if you go to walmart.com and red the review they are pretty good! just remember that the first 2 weeks are the hardest just dont give up and good luck!!
  • I am a first time mom too and so I don't have any advice at this point other than what I have learned in my research. Perhaps you may want to consider taking a Breastfeeding class through your hospital or taught by someone in your community. Check with your hospital - they likely offer classes that are fairly inexpensive (the one at my hospital is $25 a person). Also, consider reading a book or two to help - I read the American Academy of Pediatrics book on breastfeeding. I would suggest looking up the La Leche league in your area for support groups or resources. Additionally, you can ask for the Lactation Consultant to visit you after you deliver in the hospital - they apparently will come and help you. Good luck to you and congratulations on your choice to breastfeed!!
  • Breastfeeding is different for everybody and every baby when in hospital get a midwife or lactation consultant to show you how to latch baby on. As for pumps get an electric one if you can and especially if your going to be pumping a lot the medula ones are very recommended I am waiting for mine to arrive I have a mannual one from boots and it does the job but takes so much effort. I have been using tommee tippee bottles and sterilizer etc and that works great for me and baby remember to just use slow flow teats as its more like boobs they have to work a bit for boobs if you use faster ones baby may refuse to feed from you as its easyer from the bottle.
  • @Proudmommy8789 I have heard that avent is agood brand. I was also looking at medela. I'm not sure which one to get. Are they worth the price? I'm really worried about the first two weeks, I'm not one to give up but I'm really nervous. @Bevosnow I am going to be taking the classes but I heard from a friend of mine that the ones they offer here r not very good at all! So idk what to think. I am going to be getting some books to read up on it as well. I live in a small town so idk if ill have as many resources as others. And thank u. I'm glad I finally chose to bf. I was completely not going to do it until I got pregnant lol then all my parenting thoughts changed.
  • @tammy thank u. Right now I have a manual playtex one I think. I can't remember but I wantto buy an electric. I was looking at the medela ones as I've heard they r very good. Where do u find tommy tippee bottles? I have a ton of dr browns bottles as well as playtex drop ins. I've heard dr browns r one of the top brands? And I will def remember to get the slow flow nips. It nver even occured to me.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I have the MiPump As well, and love it
  • i think its worth the price! i want more kids so i want something that will last! plus the avent somes with extra parts and also parts to make it a manual pump if the battery pack is dead or there isnt a plug around! which is great for me cause i travel often!
  • Can u get the book from any book store or should igo to amazon? Ivenever heard or the mipump. Is it electric or manual? And where can I find one? @caffeinated_katie lol and I just noticed u changed ur screen name, cute lol
  • You can get the bottles from babies r us but try the ones you have first every baby is different so why spend money if not needed :) I have also heard amazing things about Dr browns and my baby has colic atm so may be getting some to see if they help with that this week shall keep you informed if I do. Also try eBay for a pump as so many people sell them and as long as you sterilize them before use can save you a fortune mine was a quarter of the price still in box used twice.
  • @jazzi89 I think you are doing all the right things to get as prepared as you possibly can. I looked online and my town has a support group for breastfeeding mom's too. They have meetings you can go to after you deliver to get help with bf. Even though your town is small maybe they have something like this too. Also, if the hospital class doesn't get good reviews, perhaps check around and see if any doula's or birth centers in your area offer classes. I am actually not taking the hospital class - my husband and I hired a doula and will be taking a bf class through her (she is also a lactation educator). Anyway, those classes may be better (and might be a bit more expensive too). Good luck to you!! I am in the same boat as you and hope that I will be able to "get it right" and breastfeed my baby successfully! :-)
  • @Proudmommy8789 that does sound well worth it. We travel a lot as well. I'm going to check it out and see how much they r. I still have to add stuff to my registry so mayb that will b on the list. Thank u!
  • I heard the book that @caffeinated_katie suggested is really good. You can order directly off the La Leche League website.
    http://www.lalecheleague.org/thewomanlyartofbreastfeeding/
  • okay i recommend that you order it online its like 20 bucks cheaper! its 108 online and 138 at the store!! and the one online comes with 60 nipple pads!!
  • I also found it on Amazon.com for only $12.16 ($4 less than La Leche League).
  • @tammy yes we r going to try these bottles first. My bf is always trying to think ahead and doesn't care abou money so he wants me to get advice on what works best. This Is his first as well and she is already extremely spoiled! Lol. And thnk u def keep me updated on if they helped ur little one. I was going to try ebay, how exactly do u go about steralizing the equip? @Bevosnow thank u. We do have abirthing center here, never thought of asking about their classes they might offer. Ill have to check that out. I'm also hoping there is a support group nearby because I hve absolutly no idea wha I'm doing. We weren't prepard at all for a baby and I'm starting to stress. I'm hoping I get it right as well. Good luck to both of us!
  • @Proudmommy8789 thank u ill see if my bf wats to order it tonight. And its from walmart? @Bevosnow ill def hit up amazon tonight I think. Thank u!
  • i am a first time mom too and im 35 weeks pregnant now, they are offering breastfeeding classes at the hospital i was giving birth in. very low fee. approximately 2 hour class and they even demostrate how to hold a baby in right positions with a dummy doll weight exactly as actual baby. i would highly recommend for you to take this class to become more confident since breasfeeding is a confidence game:)

if you plan staying with baby full time , you dont really need to invest on breastpumps. you can get a handheld one from medela for $30 or if you want medela has automatic ones for $100. it is recommended that you introduce the baby at 4 weeks to a bottle if you plan to. this is not a must, there is babies go straight to solid food after breastfeeding after a year.

latching correctly is very important , babies bottom lip has to be outward. babys shoulder , hip and legs must be in the same level . you will need to invest on agood bfeeding pillow ( my breast friend, more effective than boppy)

Also buy a good nipple cream ( motherlove nipple cream) i started using now. i used to not even be able to touch my nipples cuz it hurt so much now its in great condition. lanolin is also good but motherlove is less sticky and organic . i personally love it. i got a nursing bra. you only need 2 in the beginning and 2 later cuz your breast size will change. i have got nipple pads , disposable ones but if you like you can use shields too.

dont soap and scrub clean your breasts, natural oil in your nipples are very good. just wash it with water and make sure they are dry all the time.

another good source to learn the positions and right latch on is dr sears breastfeeding book. you can find it online. if you want i can email you my class notes that was presented in powerpoint and i can just scan and email them to you. i would highly recommend calling your hospital and finding about prenatal classes :)

also there will be nurses after birth that will come into your room and lactation consultant to teach you proper latch on. so dont worry. just relax.

first colosal milk is very little , it moght seem like nothing to you but dont worry it is plenty for a baby. it provides soo much. dont think that you need to supplement the baby with formula cuz you dont need to. real milk comes few days after you give birth. more frequent feedings the better milk quality and amount you will have.

newborns have feeding cues , that you need to follow. like they put their fist in their mouth or they bring both of their hands on their chest , almost like boxing:) when you see this feed her. dont wait till baby cries hysterically than there wont be proper latch on and you will hurt your nipples. the recommended amount of feeding during day is 8 to 10 times, if you achieve that most likely they will sleep through the night because they are full. dont think you can have a feeding schedule with a newborn because in first weeks that is not possibble. they even want your breast just for comfort.

baby also sucks on areola rather than actual nipple. if you have a sleepy baby , gently put her in burping position, gentle tap on the back and put her on the breats. relaxxxx while your feeding her , promotes more milk and drink plenty of water. there is more but i think this is the most important things, hope it helps

  • when your in the hospital.. most provide a lactation consultant.. you can ask if you and your baby can see her.. so you can see if he/she is latching on properly thats the most important thing.. secondly your going to want to use lanilol its the best.. it prevents cracking of the nipple and your gonna want to use it after each feeding for a couple of weeks.. cause by than your nipples should be toughend up.. lol.. its going to be alot of work.. so be prepared for supply and demand.. the good thing is though.. once they are around two weeks or sometimes right away they have a schedual.. they put themselves on.. my first baby i only bf for 8wks.. i was 17yr old and there were many factors why.. i felt guilty when i gave up.. the second time was much easier i had classes on it and also watched instructional videos.. its mostly to see what the baby looked like while nursing.. the latch.. you will know the latch is off by the fact that it is painfull.. when done correctly it doesnt hurt.. at least it didnt hurt me..
  • @ashthurs oh wow u r full of information! We r signedup for our prenatal classes and I'm pretty sure they include bf. so we will see if they r good. I'm hoping it won't b awaste of time and money like some ppl have said. I'm a stay at home mom right now but would eventually like to go to college on campus instead of online. And we travel a lot so I figured it would b nice to have an electric one. I have a playtex manual pump right now. Idk if they r any good or not. Hank u for the latching tips. I had no clue. I have a boppy right now. Where do u find my brest friend? I've never heard of it? As well as motherlove? Sorry I'm such a newbie at this lol. Can u get dr sears book on amazon? I'm really worried about not having enough milk. Idk y. Thank u for the feeding tips. Without ppl like u i think id give up really easily frm lack of knowledge. Thank u much!
  • @lae3 ill have to see if my hospital has a consultant my friend had her baby there about a yr n a half ago but id if she ever mentioned a consultant. I'm so worried about my nipples hurting. Have u used the nipple shields at all? Or beard anything about them. I do have a few, I can't remember what brand but I haven't heard anything about them from other ppl. I really want to try to do this without feeling like givingup
  • you might feel that way but just let it be the thing that pushes you to stick with it.. and if you dont.. try not to beat yourself up about it.. i commend any woman who trys and then says they couldnt do it.. i always wonder (not judging) about the woman who dont even want to try.. I dont get it is all.. because its the best thing for the baby.. and even at age 17 i still wanted to try for him.. but i gave up.. but at least i tried and thats how i feel about bf.. its worth trying.. nipple shields ive never tryed.. i thought they were for those with small nipples or inverted.. but ive only heard good things about them.. i just did straight to the breast.. lol.. the baby knows how to bf.. its us moms that need the help.. lol.. and encouragement.. im sure you will do find.. but seriously the lanilol is the best.. and its safe to use after ever feeding and its not harmful for baby.. wich is most important.. i had one small tube and it lasted months.. if you make it past your first few weeks you can do anything.. lol..
  • @lae3 thank u. I am def going to try to make it thru without giving up. I wil be investing in th nip cream too. Sounds like its a godsend! Lol. Thanks again for the encouraging words!
  • dont worry about not having milk as long as you establish frequent feedings you will have enough milk. i dunno about playtex but i made research and read literally million reviews before i choose each item. these are my finding and gems. i signed up for trial prime account in amazon and everythings is 2 day free shipping and prices beats every store and i dont have to run around like crazy:: i cancelled it after 30 days cuz i ordered everything i needed.

    Search for these---

1- breastfriend pillow- $40 but i found inflatible one for $24 and it is more convient and could take it everywhere if you need to. comes with a cover you can wash. great support for your back and best feeding tool for baby. reviews are very good .

2- motherlove organic nipple cream-$10 better than lanolin. i used it and it is amazing improvement on my breasts. every review seems to agree:)

3- i got medela electric pump $ 120 cute , small, comes with two bottles, bpa free. reviews says it is the best pump out there.

4- lanolin disposable breastfeeding pads $ 6 - need to keep your nipples dry so you can maintain natural moisture which you will not have sore nipples

5- i got dr sears baby book which gives you AMAZING tips on how to bfeed , wash, take care of the baby for first two years. great tecqniques not to have fussy baby. Highly recommend it but i got the bfeeding book too since i came across it at a closing bookstore. that one is just as good. i get very frustrated with some of the language in the books, this one simple and straight to a point.

bfeeding class after reading that book was so helpfull. i feel so confident. i have noone to help me , no family or friends nearby so i need it to be very confident.

another thing is that have a feeding station. sounds funny but i think its a great idea. good nursing chair. oput your feed up, put the phone next to you, snacks, plenty of water. the reason why bfeedind takes time. make things easy for yourselff. relax because it promotes more milk that way. Do not give up because first of all bfeeding will put you in a great shape. you will loose approximately 500 calories a day , thats like jogging around the block :) that was a great motivation for me lol

most important thou bfeeding babies are smarter and more confident and so many benefits , it will be too long. formula companies are just trying to replicate mothers milk and they will never be %100 successfull. they found a new mineral and vitamin everyday in mothers milk that they are amazed with. the best thing you could give your child is your milk and we are equipped with it. i used to have the same worries but really be really confident. if you have any other questions ill be happy to help you . also that le leche group suggested is a good source as well. i just couldnt go because their meeting times and places were kinda awkward for me. bfeeding class they also provided me emergency lines that i could call and speak with real lactation consulatant regarding everything, latch on, dry nipples you name it.
  • @ashthurs thank u! I'm stealing ur list lol. My bf is going to be ordering some stuff online tonight. I really do believe breast is best. I plan on doin it fr atleast 12months. How long do u plan on bfing? You have been extremely helpful! Thank u again!
