I feel so pathetic... ='(

I have sciatica. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's when your sciatic nerve that runs through your hip gets severely pinched up during pregnancy (and sometimes it happens without pregnancy at all). I had it mildly before pregnancy, but not too bad. Well, today it was particularly bad, but manageable. I laid down for a little while earlier, intending to take a nap, but I didn't and just ended up laying there for a while. But now... oh, god, now.... I can barely even walk! I was trying to fix something small to eat because I missed dinner while laying down (and trying to get answers for my friend's dilemma) and needed something to compensate. Well, I went to the bathroom first and it took me a good 2 or 3 minutes to go from a standing position to a sitting position! D: And it hurt SO bad! But I figured I could manage walking enough to make food. Big mistake. I can't even walk two feet without it hurting so bad that I broke down in tears! I tried so hard not to cry, but it didn't work. :( Now I just feel pathetic. If I let a pinched nerve make me cry, how am I going to handle labor?! I tried the stretching that the dr told me to do, but it doesn't help anything, really. The only thing that makes the pain stop is either sitting down or leaning against a doorway so that it has pinpoint pressure on the nerve. I just don't know what to do anymore! D'x

  • i have never heard of that but that sounds awful! no reason for u to feel pathetic tho.. so sorry u have to go thru this... is there anyone there to help u with cooking and stuff?
  • OMG...me too. I had to leave work today bc of it. I got to the car and broke down in tears. Hope u feel better.
  • @Mythica.. I feel your pain.. I'm going thru the same thing and on top of that I wake up in the middle of the night almost every night because I get cramps on my legs.. they got so bad the other day I woke up my hubby.. he thought I had gone into early labor..
  • Well good news is, there's medicines to help you through labor! Be it an epidural or just IV meds...there's unfortunately nothing to take (during pregnancy) to help with sciatica bc its due to inflammation, and tylenol doesn't work with that. I have 2 herniations in my lower back that sometimes flare up (happened 4 yrs ago) so I get that pain a lot. Even not pregnant, nothing really helps me with that; celebrex is the only pill I've been given that remotely lessens the pain, but that's a *huge* no-no in pregnancy. Thankfully it's only been the past few days with being pregnant. So I know where you're coming from, it sucks. As much as it hurts to move that's what helps me. It's worse when I rest but better even if I just walk around the house.
  • Try a heat pad hun!
  • Just like @cee808 said no reason to feel pathetic. That sh*t hurts lol
  • yeah and like @mam082711 said.. theres meds for labor. i'm such a baby i ask for an epidural right when i get to the hospital i can't even take the contractions at 3cm LOL
  • @cee808 No, there's no one to help me. :( Living at home momentarily, but I'm usually up really late and stuff. They go to bed like normal people. lol. >.<

@mam082711 It does! I finally got it to stop being so bad... I can walk, but I can't bend down more than a few inches, and rotating at the hip is a huge "ain't gonna happen" right now. I don't know how I got it to stop, but I laid on my side on that hip. Dunno. -shrug- lol. But I hope you get through everything okay, too!

@EmmaLouise I tried heating pads once... it didn't help. =/ A vibrating foot pillow seemed to help when it wasn't so bad... but now only pressure seems to do it.

@Lilybug04 Sucks, doesn't it? Hope you get through work a bit easier next time! -hugs-

@SharkMommy The only thing that wakes me up at night is blocking blood while laying on my back (rolled there, not on purpose) or because of being waaay too hot. >.<
  • Don't feel pathetic! Labor pain might end up being a pain that you can tolerate pretty well, and there is always the epidural! Good luck, sweets!
  • Oh my gosh, hun - no reason to feel pathetic! I had that with my first. Ugh, it's brutal. This is probably the stretch your doc suggested, but it always made me feel better (at least while I was doing it) - lay on the couch, bed whatever. If it's your right side that hurts, bend your left leg and keep your left foot flat on the bed. Then cross your right leg over and put your right ankle on your left knee. Pull your left leg as far in as you can, effectively stretching your right sciatic... hope that makes sense. I also would sit on ice cold beer cans and use them to forcefully massage the area. It was only ever temporary relief, but it was something! Hope it helps! Either way, don't feel bad for crying about it! It's awful! (a real pain in the ass... ;)) )
