who had very low iron while pregnant?

edited July 2011 in Pregnant
Hi, ladies
I am 30 weeks on Saturday and today at my doctors appointment my doctor told me I had to take an iron supplement (while I got it in a liquid) because my iron is super low. I was just wondering who else had to take an iron supplement while being pregnant and how they are doing and how there baby is doing.. I am a ftm so I kinda got scared when doctor told me my iron is super low

  • Low iron is pretty common in pregnancy.. I just found out also that mine was kinda low, and started my supplements today, so I can't give you any advice there.. but lots of other ladies can!
  • I did only for my first pregnancy... I took the iron pills and I was fine. This pregnancy I been eating frosted mini wheats everyday.. It has lots of fiber and 90% of iron that u need daily in one serving. Haha I love the strawberry flavor one It never gets old
  • Yeah this is my first pregnancy and I was anemic in high school but my first couple check ups my iron was fine but today doctor said it was super low... yeah I know I have frosted mini wheats I eat all the time. I am just always so weak and exhausted because of this little boy in my tummy
  • What's ftm?? I had it after delivery of my first and my 2nd baby had it and had to take a supplement as well. I don't even know y or how we get it?? Sorry.
  • Ftm is first time mom lol me either but my doctor said my son is taking all of my iron
  • I have low iron.. It makes me weak and lightheaded all the time..almost fainted a few times..
  • Me, I have to take an iron pill along with my prenatal.
  • @preggie20d make sure you drink that liquid through a straw and don't let it contact your teeth it will permanently stain black
  • My iron has been fine but my mom had really low iron when she was pregnant with me. She mentioned she had to take multiple supplements-I turned ok and she was fine once I was born.
  • I started seeing spots an almost fainted I got checked out and I had low iron me an baby are great
  • I've had 4 iron infusions , 3 blood transfusions due to my iron level issues. And actually the iv is so much easier then taking the pill......plus no constipation from pills etc. Yay!!
  • well ive have been anemic pretty much my whole life but its was always mild causes me to feel light headed and weak and crave ice... but now that im pregnant since my body has to produce a lot my blood.. my iron levels have gotten worse so im on iron supplements as well but no biggie and everything is fine .. jst take the pills and eat food that are high in iron and you will be fine :-D
  • I had to take the pill also ? This is my 3rd baby n never had it b4 tell this baby but so far I'm doing ok on the pill @ 1st I felt bad then after I took it for sumtime I'm ok
  • My doc. Has me on iron pills along with my prenatals. I've been on them now for a little over two weeks and haven't had any bad side affects. This is also my first baby.
  • I had very low iron with my son. Granted i was losing blood also (internal bleeding) so i ended up with 6 blood transfusions. but i have low iron again this time (3rd pregnancy) so I am on lots of iron as well. it's ok though. it's very common.

yea i have mild anemia i drink iron pills and have to eat 4 items from a food list my doc gave me everyday i hope on my nxt visit im better [-O<
  • I quit the pills immm sooooooo constipated prune or fiber bars dont wrk....i hate em
  • With my first I had low iron. I just took an OTC iron pill supplement. That is what my dr recommended for me. Baby and I didn't have any issues from it. He was a healthy 9lbs 5oz. Constipation is the worst side effect. But you can always take something to help with that like milk of magnesia or metamucil. Also egg yolk has a lot of iron in it, so eating eggs can be very good for your iron. I eat a lot of hard boiled eggs with this pregnancy lol. good luck hun! Also the extra iron will help if you've been feeling tired a lot. It def did for me.
  • I found out tht I was anemic wen I was pregnant so my nurse had me taking iron pills and colace to reduce the constipation
  • I'm anemic without being pregnant .. so therefore I HAVE TO take my iron supplement or I feel the affects of low blood. Even taking the iron supplement my iron levels are extremely low.
  • I have iron tablets all fine also tmi but i noticed when i went for # 2's they were black just Googled it and said its normal if on iron supplements
  • I have to take the liquid iron to its so gross I hate it but my doc told me if I cnt handle it jus take two flinstone vitamins a day instead of the liquid iron I droped from 40 to 0.9 so hopefully I'm back up at my next apt
  • @addi3886 i was like omg GOOGLE! haha
  • Mine was barely low. I'm a vegetarian and a competitive runner. I take one pill once a day and I'm more than okay now. It's fairly common in pregnancy.
  • @bre do you drink the iron liquid of of a straw?
  • It says baby infant drops on the bttle it has the lil sucker thing lik baby tylonel @preggie20d
  • I have to take iron pills twice a day and folate twice a day as well as my prenatal vitamins, and vitamin d supplements and I have gd that I have to poke myself 4 times a day (thank goodness I don't have to take insulin though). this is my 4th pregnancy and my 1st time going through all that. my 3 previous pregnancies, all I needed top take was my prenatal...

not enjoying the black stools from the iron pills...makes me think something is wrong.lol
  • Damn tht is a lot at least u have iron pills thou these infant drops are so gross and I have to take em twice a day I hate it
  • This is my 3rd pregnacy and everyone I have to take iron pills because my kids suck it all up...lol. So its fine, just take something for constipation ( your doc could recomend one or give you one) and dont take it with milk because it will make it not work and take it with orange jucie it helps absorb it. My kids are 10 & 3 years old and i'm 29 weeks :) Good Luck!
