What should I do..?

edited July 2011 in Breastfeeding
First time mommy and my baby is now 2 months old; She was breastfeed most of the time, and I stopped for a couple of weeks but I still have breast milk.. my babys father wants me to at least try breast feeding her again before it dries up. I was wondering why my breast milk tastes a little salty now, is it normal? It used to be sweet. Is it okay to still try..?

  • I would try....if you haven't dried up you should be able to build your supply back up. Especially if you nurse and immediately after nursing pump. It should help increase your supply in a few days. You may not get any milk when you pump the first few times but keep trying for a few days to see if you can boost your supply.
  • "An important, and often ignored issue, is the taste of your milk when no milk has been expressed for several days. When no milk is expressed, and the baby is not nursing, breasts begin to involute ("dry-up"). During this "weaning" process, the sodium content of breastmilk rises. Babies generally do not like salty breastmilk! So, a baby who is being wooed back to the breast following a nursing strike, may expect to taste your sweet milk, and be surprised (and very unhappy). You want to avoid this situation. If you have not been regularly expressing your milk, taste a bit of your expressed milk before putting your baby to your breast. Even if your milk now tastes salty, the process of involution can usually be reversed. Begin to regularly express your milk and after a few days your milk should taste sweet again."

  • I've heard what you eat can affect how your milk tastes too

  • A nutritionist and lactation consultant that's a friend of my dads told my mom to pump BEFORE you feed from the breast to produce more milk and build up stores for the fridge.
She said pumping isn't as effective as a baby's suckling, so if you pump first to get the most of it then let baby take the rest, basically your boobs will be more empty, prompting your body to produce more for later
