breech babies and mental retardation!!?? omg!! :(

So my 38 week appt showed my baby is now breech from last week. :( I'm set up to have an external version (where they try and turn her) and then be induced to have her vaginally if they successfully turn her (otherwise a c section). My problem is I have been reading about breech babies and I found several articles about there being a tie between breech babies and them being handicapped/mentally retarded. I am so scared now that something is wrong with my little girl!! Why else would she be breech at this far along??? I'm so scared. Please tell me there is other people out there who have had breech babies this far in pregnancy that were healthy!!

  • Both my sisters girls were breech and she had to have c sec, definitely nothing wrong with them, they are both bright lovely girls x
  • My daughter was breech and the flipped her at 37 weeks. She is a smart little girl with no problems.
  • My baby sis was breech up until they finally had an emergency c-section at full term. She is perfectly normal just super stubborn. No worries!
  • Girl the percentage of that is probably significantly low!! Don't worry, sure your baby will be fine don't let that stress interfere with them trying to turn ur baby! ! Relax, I have a prayer going up for u weather u believe in prayer or not! Lol
  • Knowledge is fundamental but also you also have to take a lot of things u read like a grain of salt!
  • My beautiful healthy son was born breech via csection @ 38 weeks.
  • My bf daughter was breech and shes the smartest kid in pre-k. Shes very intelligent so dont worry mamma! Everything will be fine.
  • I was breeched I think I'm fine LOL!!!
  • This makes me feel a little better.. I just keep asking myself WHY? Why is she breech? My other baby girl was a normal pregnancy.. I just am hoping this goes okay Saturday... I'm so worried. I hope she is healthy

One of my best friends was breeched and got himself all tangled up in the cord and an arm bent back where it shouldn't be and his mom had to have an emergency c-section... fast forward to today, he graduated top of his class a few years ago. He now makes a crap ton of money doing high tec computer things that are way over most peoples heads, he's the smartest person I know.
  • I am going to assume that they are handicapped/mentally retarded if they are actually born from a breech position... that's just not suppossed to happen, first it can deprive the baby of oxygen for too long which would make sense for the mental retardation part... plus it can be physically traumatizing to both mother & baby, which is why babies are either forcefully turned or delivered by cesarian when a dr knows they haven't flipped. But otherwise, I don't see how not flipping could put such an assumption on a fetus. Try not to worry mama, I'm sure she'll be just fine.

  • She is 8lbs almost they said... so they said she just ran out of room and is stuck. I hope them turning her doesn't hurt her. I really don't want a c section.. I'm just prayinng for a miracle.
  • My 8 year old was breech and she's the smartest in her class, she was my 4 bby all other kids natural not breech no problems. My daughter turned breech at 38 weeks, Dr tried turning her but no luck I ended up having a c-section and all is good! Good luck sweetie...
  • Never google!! the baby had third trimester hiccups and I read online it can be tied to cord accidents..ugh!
Then Jaden was born with jaundice and I read worse case, deafness and mental retardation.
I hope she turns safely without a c section.
  • Yes I have learned my lesson.. I shouldn't have googled. :( my hubby's mom was breech and his sisters were so I'm hoping there is just a hereditary link.

  • I just read the reasons for a breech baby can be multiple births (which I don't have just one baby in there). Things wrong with the uterus (I'm good there). Amniotic fluid levels (mine are fine) and congeital birth defects with baby. I'm scared shitless ladies. I don't know what I would do . I'm sure the prcentage is low... but there is only a 3% chance of them being breech by 37 weeks... and I got that percent. God I'm so scared!!
  • My daughter was breech and I had a c- section and she is just fine!
  • It said that 6% of breech babies are born with birth defects. That is extremely scary if you ask me!
  • Honestly they can try and link anything to mental retardation, my husband was a breech baby and he is very intelligent! My aunt had twins and one of them was breeched and that twin is actually a little smarter than the other one! @HomeBirthAdvocate have you ever heard of this?
  • My oldest brother was breech and born c section, and although I think he can be a retard sometimes, he is.definitely far from it. He's a.very smart man. (But don't tell him I said that! Haha)

My twin sister was born breech (vaginally at that), and she's a nurse now. I'm sure the chances are extremely low of there being a mental problem with the child just because he/she is breech. I wouldn't stress. :)
