How many calories to consume per day?

edited July 2011 in Pregnant
Over the past 6 days I gave gained 5 lbs, so I decided to keep track of what I'm eating to figure out where I'm going wrong. Any one know how many calories should be consumed per day during pregnancy? I Google it and got mixed results from 1800 cal to 3500 cal per day.

Yesterday I had 1780 and so far today I'm at 1945. I have been watching my blood pressure, its normal. No swelling. I did strain my achilles tendon while working out a couple weeks ago, so I haven't been able to work out since. I do have hypothyroidism, but my last levels were normal last week. I'm 24+3, baby #2, gained 13 lbs as of this morning. My OB said I should try not to gain more than 25 lbs. Any thoughts?

    @homebirthadvocate thoughts?
  • woah! You should not be cutting calories. Its summer time and those weight fluctuations are usually water retention. I can gain or lose 5 lbs a day due to how much water i drink. You should eat 300 extra calories for baby, on top of what you normal intake should be. 1700 a day seems way low.

    @ll10 I didn't think about the summer heat and water retention...good point! :) I'm not cutting calories, just started tracking whatever I put in my mouth to see if I was aimlessly consuming crazy amount of calories. I figured I'd track it for a week, then go back and see if there were any days that I really went overboard. It just doesn't seem to add up with my food intake (so far), so maybe its just water retention and not exercising :/
  • You shouldn't be counting at all. That can turn into a problem. I weighed more than that when I was 24w and doc said I was doing perfect. 13 pounds is not anything to be cutting back on.

  • I took a nutrition class last semester and learned you don't need to increase calories in the first trimester increase by 300 in the second and 450 in the third trimester. And try not to eat empty calories meaning eat nutrient rich foods rather than junk.
  • Oh i see. thats good. Some days i eat a lot and some not so much. Its probably water. Don;t worry too much. Baby and other stuff weigh about 26lbs at the end so if you go over the 25 it wont be too big of an issue. I have met some crazy doctors who are super concerned with weight for some reason but most are not so much. Its really more of a doctors personal opinion. My doctors have never once brought up weight to me.
