Pump and store

edited July 2011 in Breastfeeding
I'd like to exclusively breastfeed but will return to work six weeks postpartum. I bought the Madela pump in style last night! But will use the Tomee Tippee bottles.

I would love to hear suggestions on how to store my milk. Should I pump then pour the milk into the tommee bottles then store. Or should I store in bags?

Help!?!

  • i think you should use bags. You'll have a freezer full of milk before you know it. Also be sure to mark the date you pumped your milk on the bags.
  • @menemami. That's what I'm leaning towards. Thank you for your input. :)
  • @homebirthadvocate we need your knowledge lol. Put them in bags then freeze them. You can freeze them for certain amount of times. She will know the exact times.
  • You can store your milk frozen for up to 6 months. @krazymomofadrian
I had a stock pile for my sil in my frezzer because get frezzer was to small. As well as some of mine that I pumped in the first month.
  • @menemami it depends on what freezer you have.,
  • And where you place them in the freezer as well.
  • A nutritionist and lactation consultant that is a friend of my dads told me to pump first then have baby use the nipple because it stimulates more milk production...babys suckling is more efficient than a pump.
Im a ftm so that's the only info I have at the moment lol
  • @krazymomofadrian we both have refrigerator freezers and we were able to store for 6 months. I've never read that it depends on your frezzer. What kind of frezzer would prevent 6 months of storage?
  • @menemami. I think it depends on if you have a side by side, or freezer in the fridge. Etc
  • I never even thought of that havn't.seen a freezer in the fridge in years.
  • Lol me neither. :)
  • I used bottles when i froze them and i saw bags are def. worth the effort. my freezer was packed in no time- forget storing food.

  • So if you plan on returning to work at 6 weeks would it be better to just pump to begin with? I've heard of people failing becuase baby has a hard time adjusting to bottle...
  • Lay the bags flat in freezer. Takes up less space that way. You can stack them on top of one another.
  • @sunshine25. I would rather supplement with formula. To me there is a certain bond that only happens while breast feeding. This is baby #4. Baby #2 is the only one of my babies that had a hard time taking a bottle and within a week he would do both. I'll introduce a bottle once he has the hang of breastfeeding.

@salsabia. Thanks for the suggestion. That makes sense.
