Nah. Anemia is VERY common during pregnancy. I battle anemia even when im not preggers, so i know how you feel. Find a cereal that you like that has lots of iron, i like Life cereal, also high in folic acid. I eat canned spinach when im really needing the iron, and i cook in iron skillets to help everyone get more iron in their diet.
Green leafy vegetables, beans are good. Whole grains and cereals are usually fortified with iron, I just go through my cabinets and check nutrition labels. My favorite snack bar was loaded! Just another reason to buy more.
I like to mix total cereal with special k. Total has 100% of your daily value of iron. And the special k also has iron in it. And then anything else you eat will just be that much more
Spinach quiche with mozzarella cheese and crumbled bacon is really yummy and easy to make. Quick to prepare, but it takes an hour to bake. Just squeeze out the frozen spinach really well and you've for a yummy iron rich dinner. And leftovers are so good.
Also, an interesting note about beans. They cause gas because our tummies don't naturally have the enzyme to break them down. Certain seasonings, however, do. Cumin is one popular such ingredient found in bean-rich taco soup. With some cubed left over steak... oh man. And again, iron rich.
I have anemia anyway so I get pretty bad with preg. I take an iron supliment ontop of pre nates, and I seem to do fine. I try to eat lots of green vegies, I prefer fresh spinich, and brocolie. Red meats are high in iron also. Just watch for light headed-dizzy spells. Usually a good sign your low on iron. But as long as your eating ok and taking your vit's you should be fine.
I stopped eating red meat when I was a teen and I wasn't eating other high iron foods. Plus the depo provera shot made me bleed for a month straight. So I became anemic. I haven't had problems since, but you learn to recognize that low iron feeling. My man thinks I'm weird if I tell him I need some red meat for dinner because I feel anemic.... but he also didn't believe me when I told him I thought I was pregnant.
I'm severely anemic and have been since I was 14. Pregnancy has lowered my iron levels so far, so I'll need to have an iron infusion. Right now, I'm waiting for my hemotologist to okay it.
