edited July 2011 in Pregnant
So friday I found out I have gestational diabetes =( failed my three hour test pretty bad according to my doctor. Now I have to go to a diabetic educator. Any other mommy's to be with gestational diabetes? And if so can you tell me what to expect?

  • I'm sorry!! All I know is make sure u take ur insulin properly or it will effect ur baby later. If u don't ure more likely to have a larger baby and ur baby is at a much much higher risk of getting childhood diabetes. Did u hear about the Texas woman who had the 16lb baby??? You DON'T want that.

@newmominsept Well I'm not supposed to be taking insulin the doctor said first to follow what the diabetic educator tells me and test my blood sugar levels and that might be all I have to do. I just have no clue what the educator is going to tell mei know it will be changing my diet drastically though. And that 16 pound baby was a fluke even if my baby is going to be bigger I'm sure it won't be THAT big lol I just wanted to know of anyone could tell me what the educator will be telling me
  • The educator will talk about what causes gd and if you see a dietitian they will teach you about carbs and develop a diet plan for you to follow. They will tell you how many carbs to eat a day and how many per meal and snack. I dnt find it that bad except for when i get huge craving for something.
  • I got diagonesed with it a few weeks ago, its pretty easy for me to control through diet. The dr. Told me 90% of women can control it with just eating right, the other 10% only need meds typically. I'm supposed to eat 6 times a day with certain amounts of carbs and protein in each. It sucks because I can't really eat sweets or anything amazing anymore. The nurse said that its important to control it for the baby because not only can it make them big but it causes many issues after they are born and really doesn't affect you.
  • I'm on the same boat I have to monitor 4x a day, I'm drinkin meds, and have to watch what I eat my sugar is still up and down I drink only water I only have 9 more wks leftf but have to see my doc every wk some days I get really upset when its high for nk reason and can't eat sweets or drink something other than water :(
  • Excersize and eat low carbs no sweets and you'll be fine. I can't seem to get mind under control it was the first 2.5 weeks but now I wake up in the morning and its higher than it was before I went to bed it gets frustrating and it really brings me down sometimes but we have to do it for our babies. Good luck!
  • @myressa2011 @ncoughlin08 @sweetie30 @waitingformybaby @honeybunny Thank you ladies its good to know I'm not alone and that people are managing their diabetes without it being too much of a hassle and yeah I just want to do whatever it takes for my baby to be healthy. He's such a little fighter already! I just don't want to ruin things by the things I eat. I should be hearing from the diabetic educator today and they will tell me when to come in. thanks again ladies I feel encouraged =)

@ncoughlin08 thanks and I will. I just got the call from the diabetic educator place. They said that they have the first meeting on Tuesdays so I have to wait until then to go and that its a group meeting and then after that it will be individual meetings. My doctor specified not to put it off for even a week but now I have to. I wonder if that's ok? The last on the phone said eat normal just stay away from the obvious things like soda and juice and sweets....think I should call my doctor and let them know about the wait? He sounded concerned and like I needed to get in asap. Maybe I'm just being paranoid

  • @murphy89 thank you so much for the info that's extremely helpful especially since no one has told me what to eat and what not eat yet...all they have said is "for now stay away from the obvious things" @ncoughlin08 I think I will call my doctor. I'm just so worried that I'll eat something that makes my baby feel sick or that will have some lasting effect on him

  • @simplyraven22406 yeah the doctor said I should go back to normal after delivery. And the things I've read, which hasn't been much yet, have all said it effects the baby more than it does me =/
  • Yep. I believe so. It's like pregnancy diabetes. Most cases it goes away @Simplyraven22406
  • Thank you @lucy_loo_288 I appreciate it =)
  • I got diagnosed about 3 weeks ago and I have to take a pill before I eat breakfast. They will put you on a meal plan not a diet. They will show you what type of things you should be eating which is 3 meals and snacks in between. Its not hard. You will need to be checking your glucose levels with a little machine. They will show you a video on how it affects your baby and you can ask they anything they will be honest with you. I have 7 weeks and 4 days left for my baby and I'm doing everything I can to control it to avoid taking insulin shots.
  • Yeah I definitely want to avoid that also. I just want my baby to be ok
  • The only major complications are the baby being big since they are getting so much sugar from both their body and yours. And another is the baby having low sugar when they are born since they aren't receiving the extra help from momma. Don't worry everything will be okay and its worth it. I'm just freaking out about everything. Last night I left work hysterically because I thought I was spotting. I'm not sure if I was though it might have been a pimple. I scared myself and my family. The only good thing about gd is that from now on I see my doctor every week at the same time.
  • @lauramich the day I found out I had gd, in fact right after I found out, I got home from work and there was blood when I wiped. I was already feeling worried because of the gd and then I saw blood!!! I called my husband and he left work and we were off to the birth center. I had been having some pains too so I was super scared. When we got there it turned out I was having contractions every five minutes. I didn't even know they were contractions it just felt like the baby was in a weird position that was uncomfortable for me. They told me the blood was nothing to worry about and neither was the pain (ligament pain they sayyid). I guess I was dehydrated from the glucose test so they gave me fluids and that made the contractions slow down. They said I also had a bacterial infection that was common in pregnant women. I asked how I got it and they said "it just happens" but they said that's probably what caused the bleeding. That was an emotionally exhausting day!!!
